Important overseas driver licence conversion changes effective 1 August 2016
The NZTA is making changes to further strengthen the driver licencing system. As part of this change from 1 August 2016:
- There will be fewer locations where you can apply to convert your overseas driver licence (find agent)
- Your application will be sent to the Transport Agency for a decision. Most applications will be completed in three weeks. You will be contacted if your application is delayed. If the licence you are converting has been issued by an authority from an ‘Approved country’ below, you will most likely be given a temporary licence immediately.
Please allow plenty of time to get your New Zealand licence. Your overseas licence is only valid for up to 12 months and must meet New Zealand licencing requirements.
Applications are processed at our counters and forwarded to NZTA for approval. At times there are additional delays on overseas conversion applications and the approval may take up to 20 working days. If you have any query regarding your licence or application please contact NZTA directly on 0800 822 422 or by email [email protected]
Once you’ve been issued with a New Zealand driver licence you will no longer be able to use your overseas driver licence for driving in New Zealand.

The eDrive homework is definitely beneficial to you as a driver, super easy to navigate, and will help you to identify risks and hazards. The tutor you have will greatly affect how much you enjoy the course, so try to go to a class that you have heard has a good tutor. It is good to have had a fair bit of driving experience before taking the course to be able to participate in the discussions. I would especially recommend this course to people who already hold their restricted license and are aiming to get their full license. Overall it was a worthwhile experience!

I would so recommend to all whether you are an experienced or inexperienced driver this is a well worth doing course. Go for it if need be. You will learn so much more about yourself as a driver and others on the road. Don't hold back now get on it today :)

β β β β β The Defensive Driver's course was great. It was straight forward and presented in a way that was engaging and easy to understand. Our instructor was clear and concise, getting us to think for ourselves and use our common sense when evaluating the road conditions. When I took the test I felt calm and relaxed and was able to gain a number of useful tips that will aid me in my future driving. The knowledge I gained from the course has most definitely had a beneficial impact on my driving awareness and I feel well and truly prepared for my Full Licence Practical Test.

AA has provided a excellent course, where we can reduce time in getting our full licence test, while simultaneously getting to know more in depth about the hazards around the road, and information we probably we have never paid more attention to if it were not for the course. The instructor Tony was good,he knew what he was doing, and he simulated my interest in the course. I'm now a more confident driver now after from the course.

β β β β β Most of the things learnt were just common sense but they were a refresher to the mind. We were reminded of safe driving which we all first learnt when we took the wheel for the first time. When I drive now I am now more conscious in processing hazards.
