For 13 years i have been a chef and have absolutely loved it!
My early roots started back in Palmerston Nth where I studied and learnt the basics of what it meant to deliver quality food at my highest standard daily. From there I moved to the beautiful Hawkes Bay where I worked in winerys, bars, cafes, food trucks, catering company's & restaurants. I even opened my own cafe in Havelock North called 'Thyme Cafe' after a few years. From there, a bit bored of the town scene and hospitality, in 2013 I started a media company called D.M Productions, as a freelance videographer & specialize in wedding films, family portraits, event marketing & real estate. feel free to check me out on Insta: @danmproductions FB: D.M Productions.
Gaining love again and missing the hustle bustle of kitchens I started working in luxury hunting lodges as a private chef in some of NZs best outfitters which took me to the big USA to work and travel for 6 years. I traveled all around the west and central America, and Texas, and that's where i found my love for BBQ.
Today Black Betty is a place where i can share all my experiences and what I have learnt along the way through working with amazing chefs, celebrities, and just all round great inspiring people.
I'm proud to have my friends and family be a part of my success, and, finally put my name to my product.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ There are a few places in Hastings that sell ribs and hot wings. This place legit beats all of the others. The location is shared with Asian Diner and if you're viewing this place from the street it seems like they have a small space, but it's definitely large enough to fit around 30 or so people in one sitting. They cook their food in batches as it takes a few hours of cook time, so they do often sell out their menu. Get in early when they open so you don't miss out :)
They're only open later in the week. The vibe is rustic. Outside is still developing but it's a good spot.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The best American-style meat in Hawkes Bay. Hands-down better than anything else I’ve had living here 4 years now, and I’ve tried them all (ex-pat here). Dan is incredible and super humble. The rest of the team there is chill and attentive. You won’t be disappointed. The Corn Star is my personal favorite, but go ahead and try everything til you find yours.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is our go to for eating out or take away...maybe a bit too often! Delivers a consistent high standard every time. Fried chicken is top quality, burgers, ribs and the cornbread yum (with extra butter!)...loaded tater tots with cheese sauce and bacon. You get the same level of excellence every time, great eating in Hastings highly recommend.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Juicy tender brisket, photo does not do it justice, I ate most of it before I got a photo, and a good portion for $10.
Pork ribs are not over sauced and ribs have excellent bite.
Burger bun was 10/10 smash burger patties done perfectly .
Look fwd to trying the fried chicken = food regrets!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Smash burger from Black Betty BBQ. Nicely cooked meat, 2 large patties. $16. Would like to see wait/reception staff wearing a mask ... should be mandatory. Cardboard, recyclable container.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I loved it. Cool atmosphere, nice set up, quick and friendly service. (But I did go at a quiet time).
The food was nicely thought out, and the portions were generous. I am happy to pay good money for good food and service. Let's just say I got more bang for my buck then expected. The burger was big. And if you are eating alone a side dish of loaded fries is too much with the burger. For me, each item could have been a feed on its own. (I couldn't finish my meal). I will be recommending Black Betty to anyone willing to hear about a good spot to eat.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tasty food, with melt in your mouth slow cooked meat. The service was good with fast preparation of our meals. A good sized burger and the toasty something different, in a good way. I would come back again for sure. The atmosphere was rustic, backyard mates garage kinda vibes and it wasn't too busy for a Friday afternoon. Thanks!
