★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Blue Kanu has a Vibe all of its own. From the moment you walk in, you know that you are in for a great experience. The decor is trendy and the staff attentive and friendly - our waiter Michael was fantastic. Individual meal requirements were attended to quickly with no fuss. The Asian/Polynesian fusion food was excellent. The Fish with squid ink crackers, steamed XO dumpligs and the smoked Kahawai salad fantastic. I can highly recommend the slow braised teriyaki beef cheek - soo tender and flavoursome. And what can I say about the Koko Samoa Chocolate Cheesecake- speechless. For a dining experience in Queenstown with a difference, you must try Bluekanu.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Disclaimer: If you enjoy a lot of fusion food you’ll probably enjoy the food as I can see how it incorporates Asian and Polynesian flavours. However, I personally enjoy and lean more towards savoury and salty foods.
This restaurant was highly recommended in reviews and because of this, our friends also suggested we check it out as it’s a “must eat while in Queenstown” in many blogs. We were severely underwhelmed.
We tried the dumplings, duck nachos and the pork belly. We were originally going to get the “feed the wok” however we were on a time crunch and only had the table for less time than it would take for the “feed the wok” menu. We’re relieved that we didn’t end up getting that as the food we did order did not live up to the hype of this restaurant.
Everything was nicely presented. Taste-wise it leans very heavily towards rich and sweet (think coconut flavours). The pork belly did have chilli but it was mixed with sugar, and there was no spice. There wasn’t enough savoury flavours/Asian savoury flavours for my liking. I enjoy traditional Chinese food, savoury and umami flavours.
The service was average, so far throughout our Queenstown trip the service and rapport with hospitality staff have been amazing the entire time so the average service contrasts more.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Our dinner at Blue Kanu was even better than we expected! All of the food and cocktails were super tasty and the staff were lovely and welcoming. The winning dish for us was the market fish kokoda which was recommended by someone we met at bar before dinner. Something we wouldn't usually have ordered but it was so creamy and full of flavour I was tempted to order a second. Special mentions also go to the prawn toast ? My husband is gluten intolerant and there was so much on the menu he could eat. Added bonus was the great music they had playing! Will definitely be back here again in the future!
