About Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferry Wellington Terminal

On board with sustainability

Our newest vessel - The Straitsman, was chosen partly because of its ‘green features.’ As the most modern, ship operating on Cook Strait it operates a variety of technologies to ensure maximum efficiency such as utilising waste energy from the engines to heat water, it is also fitted with a heat recovery wheel which is used to help produce heat, in the winter.

Fuel efficiency is a priority across the fleet, with the ships operating on a schedule that ensures optimal sensible fuel usage and therefore reduces emissions.

We use an environmentally approved paint system on the hulls of our vessels that is designed to reduce drag through the water and save fuel.

We offer recycling (paper, glass and plastics) on board for both passengers and staff – and actively encourage their usage. We aim to source products that are grown or sourced locally and use minimal packaging. Where products are not available locally, such as coffee beans, we choose organic and Fair Trade. Toiletries and cleaning products are purchased in bulk and are safe for the marine environment.

Four crossings in the last few weeks and apart from delayed sailings it has been great. The cabins are well worth the investment and while you dont get long to sleep you can at least rest a bit on the way across the strait which makes a lot of diffference at the other end!

Better than expected and on time! Based on the other reviews I was a bit unsure what to expect... So it was a positive surprise. It is very nice to take the ferry during the day. We came with our camper 2 hours before departure. We could easily check in and were directed to car park near the terminal. We used the time to get a glimpse of the city. The ferry was on time, the staff was very friendly. There ist free WiFi on board which was quite decent. The ferry itself was not new but more than acceptable, including the toilets. The only complain is the price but their competition is even more expensive.

You get a good crossing with this company, we took the night boat and the beds were clean just like the cabin we had. It's only a pity that you do not see the beautiful nature of the southern island by the night boat.

WARNING:NOT SAFE FOR COVID Not all staff at wharf wearing masks, unmasked staff coming right up to car windows. No enforcement of mask mandate on ferry. PA announcements re mandate, hard to understand. But no staff patrolling and reminding people to wear masks. Many people unmasked in outdoor and indoor spaces. These ferries are highly dangerous, especially with Omicron coming. They need a dedicated staff member patrolling the boat.

Despite the sea sickness, we had a smooth trip. The weather was great, so we were outside the whole time, enjoying the beautiful scenery.

I was a little worried that the crossing was going to be really rough as it was so windy in Wellington, but I was surprised at just how smooth the ferry was! The crossing was 3.5 hours and we took our hire car across with us - no problems! The views when arriving at Picton were great! Book DIrect with the ferry company as they had some great offeres on when we booked!

Ferry crossing was delayed but at least two hours, but through no fault of bluebridge. When the weather is rough is can be tough. . . . Kept informed initially by phone call of the delay and then the staff are incredible as well!! . . . But the icing on the cake is the free cookies they give out!! Oh my lord these cookies are the best I have ever had! Good effort!

Don't use Blueridge if you have a connecting bus. The ferry was 2.5 hours late despite perfect weather. All they offered was a trip back to Wellington, for which I payed the full price again.
