This place is amazing and well worth a visit. So much history packed into one place. Our guide Susan was very knowledgeable, personal and obviously loved her job! So thankful that the owners had the foresight to restore, preserve and open to the public. Make sure you book as it’s open by appointment only. You won’t be disappointed. We had the best time.

This place is amazing. The guides are informed and enthusiastic about this whaling history that really made the area what it is today. Butlers Point is a must see! Appointments only. Jan, Jan, Susan & Lizzie do an incredible job. The gardens and land are beautiful, and everyone goes away just that bit more informed of the history and impact this place& the Butler family made on Monganui. Thanks Jan for keeping this place available.

This is absolutely must go spot in Far North. Guider offered a brilliant tour covered all around whaling industry with lots an lots details. The garden, plants, house and views are beautiful. Ambergris and dog poo are so close, people should all pickup dog poo on beach. Maybe, one day there is flowing gold call ambergris been collected. That's amazing place. Thanks to Lizzie and team at butler point.

Butlers Point is a hidden gem set in the magic of the Far North. The entrance along a white gravel drive beside the Mangonui Harbour sets the scene. Huge Pohutakawas who have seen the life of Maori and the Butler family centuries ago are guardians of this environment. Our Guide to the Whaling Museum , Home and garden was an enthusiastic woman, who arrives and hour early to place fresh flowers in the house, giving us a feeling of a living home, and taking us back 170 years. The whaling museum is full of fascinating and history, the best I have seen in NZ ( not that I am an authority !) The travelling piano, faded photos of the 3 past owners, furniture and remarkable kitchen take you back and there. I loved the garden with its tropical planting, and rustic tree arbour with ancient roses and Camillas. Take time and a picnic to this charming and unique place which is so lovingly maintained.

We spent a fascinating 2 hours being shown around the museum and gardens. Our guide Lizzie was very friendly and welcoming and full of knowledge, and made the whole experience fun. Highly recommended, as it provides a real insight into a part of New Zealand’s history and connection to the whaling industry. Impressive and humbling to see how the original home and gardens have been preserved and lovingly maintained by the family.

Fascinating to hear about the history through Jan our tour guide, well worth it, the museum is excellent. The gardens and house tour was an unexpected highlight. Go to the Pa site, and check out the 12metre wide Pohutukawa tree!
