About Devonport Museum

History

Devonport is one of Auckland's earliest nineteenth century European settlements. It has a dramatic volcanic past evident in the shape of the land, a close relationship with the sea and a long history of settlement by Maori. It has been home to the New Zealand Navy for many years, and has a strong connection with the Army. It was a significant centre for early shipbuilding and the base for transport as far north as Waiwera. It is recognised as having some of the best streetscapes of nineteenth century commercial and residential buildings in New Zealand.

The Devonport Historical and Museum Society Inc. was formed in September 1977 and is dedicated to preserving local heritage and history, and to presenting the local stories. We are supported by Auckland Council and the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

The museum is housed in part of an early Presbyterian Church building that was moved by the society to the old Mt Cambria quarry site on 30 March 1978.

Being into Ancestry I visited and found pieces of history that directly related to ancestors who lived locally. As I build up more information I wonder if another visit will uncover more surprises. Definitely worth a wander through. Carl Prime married "Toots" Alison, Alison family started the Devonport Steam Ferry Company.

Well worth a visit if you want to know about the history of Devonport and the harbour etc. For a charitable run museum they have a lot to offer. Only problem I found was the building was quite cool inside. If you get the time please visit and support this vital time capsule.

Small but still covers the rich history of Devon port and New Zealand. It's free of cost but you can donate something if you want.
