Dixon Street Delicatessen - Te Aro
Now in it's third generation, Dixon St. Deli has been supplying Wellington with gourmet delights since 1930.
Charlie Chait immigrated from Poland in 1920 and opened Farm and Poultry Supplies Ltd in Dixon Street, Wellington.
In 1974 son Martin, along with his wife Jayne, took over the family business and developed it into a gourmet deli concept. Martin and Jayne scoured the world for fresh and innovative cuisine, introducing NZ to delicacies such as Russian fudge, baked cheesecake and bagels.
In 2000 Jayne and Martin's son Ari began the third generation and updated the deli to it's current cafe format.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Dixon Street Delicatessen used to have a national reputation. I don't go to Wellington often these days but when I went there 20 years ago it was excellent. Recently I had to arrive in Wellington about breakfast time so I went straight there. I wish I hadn't.
The website pics show a good selection of counter food. Ok it was only 8 am but there were only a few scones. The display was barren. However the kitchen menu was very good and well priced. The food was worth it if not outstanding. Then the coffee arrived. It was watery, lacking flavor or creme. On the few occasions I have had coffee that bad, I don't complain, but I don't go back. The coffee wasn't worth a star so I rated the place a three. Life is too short to waste on bad coffee. Very disappointed.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stopped in for brunch. One member of our party ordered eggs benedict with bacon and received two poached eggs on toast as can be seen from the photo. We then asked where the hollandaise sauce was and they brought it out separately. That's not exactly how I imagined eggs benedict to be like. We also ordered Americano coffee and it was rather watery. Don't think I'll be going back there especially given eggs Benedict, a chicken filo pastry and a toasted sandwich with three drinks came to $54.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Upmarket ambiance, friend staff members, with good food to match. We tried the baked salmon, and Chicken potato cake with side salads each. Very happy with what we get. Unfortunately, although the interior is nice with old/old-school ornaments, such effect/design/concept has been in almost every café and restaurant we visited; hence, it start to lost its appeal.
