Introducing The Duke

The Duke of Wellington. Victor of the Battle of Waterloo. Wearer of snazzy boots. Namesake of the coolest little capital in the world.

What is less well known about the Duke, is that after a long day on the battlefield, he enjoyed a nice bevvy and a hearty meal, in the company of interesting and beautiful people.

Indeed, just after he splashed up onto the shores of Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara in 1787, having taken a wrong turn at the Cape of Good Hope on his way to India, he was heard to utter, “Forsooth! I could really go for a local brew and a nice pie right now!”*

So to honour the old Duke, on the very spot that he first landed in what would become Wellington**, we’ve created The Duke of Wellington Gastro Pub. We’ll provide an array of lovely, local bevvies and delicious, hearty meals, for you to enjoy, in stylish, warm and welcoming surroundings. You just need to gather a few of your most interesting and beautiful friends and head on down to see us.

*After extensive research, we have found absolutely no proof that any of this occurred. But then again, there’s no proof that it didn’t…

The staff are knowledgeable of the drinks they serve and if your not to sure what to try ask them for a recommendation. The one I was recommend was a yummy fruit punch sour beer. It was devine and excellent recommendation by the lady serving me. Would go again but next time to try the food!

I had the fish and chips which really was no better than shark and tattie at an old style chippie. The fish was dry and oily chips average and coldslaw over-sauced. The wine list was interesting with some good options

Went along with a few work mates and there was an excellent 3 piece band called 'Dr Ropata Experience' playing which added to the atmosphere. They had an excellent set of classic tunes which provided great back-ground ambience but they also played some classic sing-along tunes which set the evening off perfectly. Would highly recommend - particularly if this band are playing. Top marks.

Since the last time I was here (quite a few years ago) the interior has been renovated, but the quality of food is still as good as it was back then. I highly recommend Duke of Wellington for a tasty and satisfying meal. I highly recommend the Beef Mediterranean Salad!!
