โ โ โ โ โ Don't believe the high ratings on Hostelbookers or Hostelworld. I've spent the last 5 months traveling around New Zealand and this was easily my least favorite backpackers. The best thing I can say is that the staff were accommodating and the wifi was fast. On the flip side, the kitchen was a mess with certain burners not working. The walls were unpainted and unfinished. They overbooked our room, so we had people wandering in wondering where they were supposed to sleep when there was no room left. Worst of all, I woke up the next day and realized that I had been bitten dozens of times in the night. Not good. Avoid.

โ โ โ โ โ Very bad experience. We were welcomed without our rooms being available, they even asked us how much we had payed on the booking. The walls are dirty and there was a weird odour of sewage. After having a drink in a bar, we were blocked outside because no one had given us the keys to get in.
We do not recommend this accommodation ...

โ โ โ โ โ Wasn't very very happy and I'm so upset and angry.
Last weekend (4/11/2017)My family about 10 people,4 adults and six children. On September we make a booking with a man he said he's the manager everything was discussed on the phone and then he send me their account number to deposit the half of our two rooms. Because he said they can't hold the rooms unless we deposit half, we just want to book for one night as we are planning to go for Rugby league finals at the Waikato stadium and have a sleepover because of the kids. Then next day back to Auckland, We deposit the money and he send over confirmation thru email and we still holding the receipt of the money. On the day that was Friday before Saturday, I called to reconfirm our booking and young Indian guy answered the phone said our name was not on the system. And that was where the argument started, he mentioned the manager just passed away two weeks ago. I was so angry because we are looking forward to go and hes not a good customer services at all.....I can tell....I told him will see you face to face tomorrow and discuss this further. If your manager just passed two weeks ago from all the time we book our room on the 15 of September and still nothing nothing no at all reservation for us how is this possible????He said too many exuses blaming their boss bla bla bla and he has no respect at all. He knew we're upset, angry and hes answered back everytime we complained. He said he can't find another place for us all fully booked but he can refund our money. We don't want our money back we just need a room for us as the weather on that day was really bad. And he said can't do anything BUT they are lying still some rooms at other places but they refused to pay the rest for us as they are responsible.
I recommended this place, very very poor customer service. Lucky we change our mind get out refund and walk out. This place is very smelly around the lounge area. I guess need more improvement with the facilities especially the customer services.......Very unhappy customer.

โ โ โ โ โ We'd asked for a room for a group of 6 people, which was confirmed at the time of booking. When we arrived, we were told that we were split up into two separate groups and at the time of booking, there was never really that availability at the hostel. We showed the staff the response from Eagles Nest confirming we'd have our own room. He then pretended to make a call and said there was nothing he could do.
There were also a bed bug problem. We encountered one girl who was sat up in the common area for the second night in a row as she could not get any sleep due to being bitten really badly.
Would not recommend.

โ โ โ โ โ *Under new management*
I met some awesome guests and had some great conversations however sadly not with the owner. What was a welcoming conversation unexpectedly turned into one of inappropriate and personal questions about myself which then became comments on how my arms 'looked like some of a girl that could give good massages'. Insisting that I needed an early night so I could end the conversation and leave the room he then insisted which he had done previously once already, 'if you would like, you can come join me in my room'.
I was left feeling uncomfortable and shocked by the fact that the owner of a facility which should be made to feel as safe and inviting as possible for the guests could make such remarks so carelessly.
When it came to the time to collect my $10 deposit made for the key, he quite comfortably commented on how he was surprised that I didn't actually take up his offer, like he actually believed I would!
It is seriously sad I have to leave a review like this.

โ โ โ โ โ Good location, that's the only good thing about it. Smell is not very pleasant going in! Lost to even find where the reception is. Room wasent very well presented or worth the money at all! Woke up the next day with beetles crawling through the bed. Safe to say I am not very happy!

โ โ โ โ โ I'm writing this at 2 am from the bed in the private room thay my boyfriend and I paid $55 for. We are laying on top of the blankets and still sweating. It is so hot in this room and with no fan or windows it is impossible to cool it off. I was able to fall asleep for about 30 minutes before the "kids" that are staying down the hall woke me up by running around and slamming doors. If there is a "lights out" policy here it's not enforced at all (unlike every other hostel I've stayed at). The volume of the other guests paired with the extreme heat in this room makes it impossible to sleep.
When we checked in the host felt the need to give us a speech about how we need to be sure to do our own dishes because they haven't been getting done. Even though we're only here for one night and was just tryong tk check in she felt the need to explain and tell us that we better be sure to do any dishes we dirty. We're not stupid and don't need to be given a speech about cleaning up after ourselves as we check in.
Honestly if I was asleep right now instead of boiling I wouldn't be writing this review. Moral of the story? Be a little more welcoming, encourage your guests to lower the volume at a reasonable hour, and get some damn fans.

โ โ โ โ โ Very small place with thin walls so you can hear conversations but was still very quiet late at night. Great showers. Tiny kitchen that can be frustrating at meal times.
Receptionist did not have any change to give people their key deposits back so we had to wait around a while until he sorted himself out.
