The Faraday Centre in Napier, is Hawke's Bay's Museum of Technology. It's a place of discovery where history comes alive through hands on experience.
About Faraday Museum of Technology
The Faraday Museum of Technology began in 1979 as the Hawke's Bay Museum of Technology. Several individuals discovered that a Fullagar Engine used by the Municipal Electrical Department was no longer needed and was destined for the scrap yard. Rather than seeing this happen, this group which was passionate about preserving this engine and many other items of technology, formed a Society.
They initially based themselves at McLeod's Vineyard, but after a couple of years moved to a more roomy site at the bottom of Milton Road, Napier. The word spread fast around the community that the group was looking for interesting items from previous decades and the collection grew rapidly. A museum of technology society was formed and many of those items formed the core of the collection that is on display today.
The next move for the museum was to Faraday Street to where the centre is located today. It was renamed as The Faraday Centre in 1995 when it merged with the Hawke's Bay Cultural Trust.
Faraday Street is named after the great 19th century scientist Michael Faraday who made significant discoveries in science, particularly in electricity generation.

β β β β β What a lovely few hours out, we had family down with kids of all ages and from 2 -65 we all loved it. It was very interractive and what a great way for the kids to see how we used to live. The staff were also great! We loved it. We will be back! Thank you

β β β β β This is a favourite place to take the kids. We live in Hawkes Bay and go a lot but still never gets boring. The volunteers are always so helpful and knowledgeable. We love that the kids get to touch mostly everything. The Tesla coil is also a fun thing to watch if you are lucky enough to be there when they start it up.

β β β β β Highly recommended! A great treat for the family. This is a HANDS ON museum which makes it pure joy for kids of all ages. This is small but the staff engagement and ability to touch things makes it the best old fashioned musseum I've seen in New Zealand, far better than the similar old fashion area at Auckland 's MOTAT. It is very economic for a family of 5 and you could easily spend half a day here. My 3 children are aged 6 to 11 and all loved it (this rarely happens as there is always 1 that disagrees). They had a tesla coil, the tardis, engines, old vehicles (that you can sit on), old wood work tools, musical instruments, old communication boards, traffic light systems, old shops, toys, and so much more. A must see for the family in napier!

β β β β β A very interactive little museum made for all ages. You can touch and play with a lot of the artefacts on display. Plenty of vintage gear like dial up phones, a working Tesla coil, pinball machine amongst other small things. Not as big as motat but for the price you could easily spend a good 45 mins there.

β β β β β Excellent Museum, you could play with old dial phone, vacuum transport token, spring transport token system. You could touch and play with the display item.
Don't miss the life experience of Nikola Tesla's Tesla Coil. It's amazing.
A nice place to spend 2-3 hours.
The Museum is running by a group of volunteers, no support from Council or government.
