Four Square Te Aroha - Four Square Te Aroha 122/126 Whitaker Street
About Four Square Te Aroha
Why the name Four Square?
The name Four Square emerged when Mr Barker, while talking on the telephone to one of the buying group members on 4th July 1924, drew a square around the 4 of the date on his calendar. He immediately realised he had a suitable name for the buying group, stating that "they would stand 'Four Square' to all the winds that blew".
By the end of 1924, products were appearing under the Four Square name, and by 1929, discussions were underway on the use of a common branding on stores. Early versions of the Four Square sign were produced in the form of red and gold hand painted glass panels for display in members' stores.
In February 1948, New Zealand's first self-service grocery store was opened in Onehunga by Phil Barker (the son of the founder of the group) and Ray McGregor. This soon became the norm for grocery retailing.

β β β β β Excellent shop. Even though you pay a little more it is well worth it. if they don't have what you want they will get it in for you. The two brothers are a credit to our town, and I hope they stay here. And the fact that they are now stocking Barker's goods, wow that is a bonus. All the very best guys, you have done well.

β β β β β Always fully stocked shelves. Meat always looks so fresh..
Friendly helpful staff, great help for the elderly.
And they have cooked chicken, tenders & chips piping hot ready to go. They made it yummy with chicken cooked through. You can even get a stamp, post a letter & do banking. No harm checking it out.

β β β β β Awesome staff nice an friendly, all you need in one shop. Post office, fruit veges, and groceries. It's all there. This shop maybe little but it has a great range of everything that I can get in the big supermarket. And the changes in the shop are awesome.

β β β β β Very busy shop. Can't understand what the shop keeper is saying. We speak kiwi English here and to be successful they need to learn our language. Customers don't like then talking to us in their language as we have joined what you're saying which makes it impossible to ask for help
