About Four Square Waitarere

Why the name Four Square?

The name Four Square emerged when Mr Barker, while talking on the telephone to one of the buying group members on 4th July 1924, drew a square around the 4 of the date on his calendar. He immediately realised he had a suitable name for the buying group, stating that "they would stand 'Four Square' to all the winds that blew".

By the end of 1924, products were appearing under the Four Square name, and by 1929, discussions were underway on the use of a common branding on stores. Early versions of the Four Square sign were produced in the form of red and gold hand painted glass panels for display in members' stores.

In February 1948, New Zealand's first self-service grocery store was opened in Onehunga by Phil Barker (the son of the founder of the group) and Ray McGregor. This soon became the norm for grocery retailing.

I have been in this store probably 6 or 7 times now and have never had a good experience. Their customer service skills are non existent, very rude and seem to have an arrogant can't be bothered attitude. I tried to engage with a smile and friendly Hi to one of the young guys one day and he just yawned and said he was tired. Wow, plenty of people would be grateful to have a job. Today I went in for ice cream on a cone, there was an older gentleman waiting to be served also for an ice cream and we just got ignored while the 2 young fellas were too busy laughing and chatting to someone. I walked out. Train your staff better please.

Went to this 4 square today to buy my granddaughter an icecream. We were told by the young man that children under 12 weren't allowed in the shop with level 2 restrictions. I told him this was not legal and then an older wahini of the larger persuasion came stomping out from the back and told us we had to leave the store OR eave my granddaughter (3 years old) outside by herself. She gestured with her hand shooing us out and refused to serve us. I'm horrified that my granddaughter had to witness such a nasty person as this woman at such a young age. I will never return and will be making sure that our whanau are aware of this treatment.

This place was voted best Four Square in the country last year. You can see why. This place has everything. Super clean and not too crowded layout. Friendly staff. Milkshakes, pies, GIANT pizzas, speciality breads etc... They make their own pies and family sized pies too. Steak, Kumara and bacon pies. Mmmmmh.
