β β β β β We did the Hole in the Rock Dolphin cruise and can highly recommend it! Even if you donβt spot dolphins up close, itβs a lot of fun and you see some interesting islands/places along the way, including the Hole in the Rock near the end.
We were fortunate enough to see dolphins and were even able to go through the Hole in the Rock.
The crew is friendly and professional, providing relevant and interesting information.
Tip: if youβre coming from Auckland youβll need longer than expected and the final cruise leaves at 13:30. So best leave Auckland between 8:00 and 9:00 to make sure you donβt miss the cruise!

β β β β β We went on the dolphin cruise with the hole in the rock and the island extension at Urupukapuka. This was one of our favourite days from our Northland holiday. The staff were professional, very friendly and great kiwi banter and commentary from the Captain.
Would highly recommend, especially as they guarantee dolphin sightings or else you get a free trip to try again.

β β β β β I went for a dolphin and hole in the rock ride on 27th Dec but the organizers did not make any effort to show us dolphins. They did not take us to places where dolphins could be spotted. I was very disappointed with the ride as the main reason I opted for this ride is to see some dolphins. When asked, we were told if possible only then you will be able to see dolphins but there was effort from their end to show us dolphins. I would recommend if you want to see dolphins, make sure you book a ride where they would take you to places to show dolphins. Very disappointing ?

β β β β β Worth a tripοΌWe took the hole in the rock tour and saw abundant islands, hordes of dolphins ?, various sailboats and even played on the islands for a while. The three to four hours of the whole journey is completely worth the money, and I love the part of watching dolphins. The dolphin mother and her baby dolphins greeted each other around the boat, very cute?. I didn't expect to be able to see dolphins so close with my eyes. We feels very lucky, happy and satisfied. A big thank you to all the friendly staff and humorous captain.

β β β β β VISIT: end of February 2020
COMPANY: Great Sights
TOUR: Full-Day Bay of Islands Dolphin Cruise with Hole in the Rock Visit
Overall this cruise was beautiful and cool to see this side of New Zealand and we had a GREAT time. They DO recommend sunscreen and even offer it for free on the ship because of the ozone layer you will get burnt. I hardly ever burn and tan easily and I was definitely red the next day!
I recommend lining up early, there is limited seating towards the front of the boat and was a bit of a bum rush to get those seats. I also wouldn't sit at the absolute FRONT of the boat as we got seats to the side and the boat turns around often, so you'll get close to all the sights you need to see.
ON THE BOAT: there are plenty of bathrooms and snacks/drinks to order. There are also several restaurants nearby the port to stop before the cruise starts
One of the major disadvantages of our trip is that it was a WHOLE day tour and the cruise itself doesn't take that long. The way Great Sights structures it is that they pick up from Auckland and some people have an earlier tour, so we get to Paihia and had 2.5 hours to kill, which was fine, but we hadn't really planned for this. So, we stopped at a restaurant to eat, but you get there so early that they're not yet ready for serving lunch, so it was a small bit of a scrambling, as you don't want to go too far, as they start lining up for the cruise soon
We both LOVED this tour and it was WORTH it, but to save on travel time, it would have been nicer to stay in Paihia. You have to be at the port for pickup from Auckland so early and it takes 2 hours to get to Paihia...so we had to leave our hotel before 7am for a tour that started at 1:15-1:30pm.

β β β β β Was a ok trip. But the charges are quite high considering the experience. We went on the trip last week of December. Only saw 3 dolphins and nothing else. Kids were bored. Spent one hour at Otehei and was fully crowded. We didn't even get a seat. Don't select the 2pm trip as it was pretty much boring.

β β β β β My wife and I went on this cruise as part of our honeymoon. We had an amazing time, the weather was great, the ride was smooth, our captain was very informative and more importantly very funny.
To top it all off we had a fantastic time seeing the dolphins and it was a real highlight of our trip.
