Brilliant place, but it is a dessert! Extremely hot and dry in summer!!! Sunglasses are a must. We went at 9am and were really glad we did. Sand is hard to walk in, in jandels and by mid-day would be too hot to stand on in bare feet. The 'beginner' slope by the stream at the carpark was perfect to access and steep enough for us. Faster, longer slopes nearby. Hard to take photos and dune surf (the sand is like liquid and would probably ruin your phone). We spend about an hour & 1/2 here, and did feel a bit shattered from the sun that night. So much fun thought!!! Super friendly and helpful local Iwi onsite to direct visitors. Toilets are fresh and smell like daisies (surprisingly true). There's also a couple of lunch tables. Just a magic spot, really recommend

Great experience sliding down the sand dunes. You can hire the sand dune board at the location. They charge $15 per board and will need cash payments and keep your driver's license as bond. No cell coverage. You can also access the 90 mile beach from here and enjoy some beach driving experience in 4x4 drive only.

Really great place to come to, it‘s so different from any other place we have been to in New Zealand! We did not hire a sand board, but had a lot of fun watching other people struggle up and down the dunes. Don‘t forget your sunscreen, it truly is like being in the desert!

One of the wonders in New Zealand as this not what we expect to see in a country like NZ. A desert (not really, but you know) surrounded by greeneries and the beach. Beautiful on a lovely sunny day. Kids will love it.

A great place to take the kids or just visit yourself. Was very hot so didn't go up, but it looks like fun. Huge rolling sand dunes perfect for jumping or sliding down. Very picturesque desert in the middle of the nowhere in the far North!

Such a great place for kids (And big kids). Unfortuntely it rained the night before so the dunes were wet. It made for easier climbing but out makeshift boards didn't fare so well. We all still had lots of fun. Beautiful views from the top!
