I’m Stephen Julian, founder and guide at Real Rotorua. I started this company because of the lack of down to-earth tour options in my hometown. I belive that this beautiful district is more than the sum of its paid attractions, and I wanted visitors to Rotorua to see the places that my mother used to take me as a child.
I have had a number of different jobs and businesses over the years. I have been a truck driver, owned a cleaning company and delivered tank water to rural properties. Nowadays I use a combination of all my learnt skills and experiences; driving tourist around, providing them with refreshments and cleaning up afterwards … and I have never been happier!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Took me and my two boys on this adventure and they could not stop talking about it! Stephen provided top notch service and was an amazing guide! We really enjoyed his stories and how knowledgeable and passionate he was. He even picked us up and dropped us back to our accomodation. I’d say this is a must do with the kids when you’re in Rotorua.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It sounded so simple - take a night-time stroll through some bush to see some glowworms. However this turned out to be one of, if not the best tourist activities I've ever taken part in. The whole evening was run with an effortless, easygoing professionalism by host Stephen that most other tour operators would do well to emulate, while his knowledge of the area, the plants and the animals was impressive and totally infectious. Then apart from the walk and the glowworms there were multiple cherries on top - seeing wallabies and possums, the hot chocolate and biscuits at the end, and the stunning starscape overhead since we were so far from the town lights. The biggest cherry though was the amazing photographs that Stephen set up and took of us during the walk.
Do yourself a favour while supporting a fantastic local business, and take this tour!

I’m a kiwi born and raised and still found so much enjoyment and learnt more about our own backyard in the few hours with Stephen (who is a master of his craft) than I have in all my own solo adventures combined. Walked for roughly 90mins straight without breaking a sweat so very accessible for all ages. Stephen is a natural entertainer and very Proffesional. Already recommending it to other family who are on holiday with me in the area. 5 stars and would gladly do it again next time I’m down !!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stephen is an excellent guide and a true professional, we went in a larger group of 11 and he had no troubles guiding us. We enjoyed his tour immensely and would definitely recommend it to anybody who wants to learn more about glow worms or anybody who wants to see them up close.
The trek is accessible for all ages and we completed it without breaking a sweat!

This tour was so much more than just checking out the glow worms. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. A night we’ll always remember! And topped off with a delicious hot choc and short bread to end the night, what a treat
