In July 2017 a hand shake between two mates, Matt Barnard and Nev Wilson marked the start of Paddle Board Rotorua. So in the 2017/2018 summer they proudly announced that they were open for business.
Experienced outdoorsmen, Nev and Matt, have a respect for their local lakes. Their goal for the future of their business is to give back to the lakes. Matt explains: “We have the goal to support conservation work because there is a lot of algae bloom and also catfish which have unfortunately made their way in to our beautiful lakes, there are heaps of invasive species so we want to help to get rid of them.”
Matt has always had a keen interest in conservation and has experience teaching others about our native landscape during his previous 2 years as a tour guide at Canopy Tours. Matt is a surfer, national white water rafter and works for himself as a musician performing gigs around Rotorua. Nev Wilson is an avid surfer too and white water kayaker, full time time dad to 3 and he also works as an engineer and always dreamed of setting up his own business in the outdoors!

β β β β β A great opportunity to see glow worms in this unique experience. The boarding takes a little practice but I was standing pretty soon, even as a first timer. If you go in Autumn make sure to take warm clothes that aren't made of cotton- it gets cold when the sun goes down.

β β β β β We had such a great time. There is so much to take in on this tour, from the glow worms to many other animals and critters like owls and freshwater crayfish. We paddled across the mirror lake under a clear milky way with a very friendly and knowledgeable guide. I would highly recommend this tour!

β β β β β My husband and I did a paddle boarding tour on a gorgeous summer afternoon at Lake Okareka. Our guide Jonathan was relaxed, friendly and experienced. We went around the coast of the lake, through some caves, to a beach for a swim, and then did some cliff jumping into the lake on the way back. Jonathan fit the tour to our level of experience and sense of adventure. An absolutely awesome experience. Highly recommend.

β β β β β The evening kayak tour was an amazing experience! We really enjoyed the quiet and peaceful lake at night despite getting rained on. We got to see lots of stars later at night, and kayaking under such a bright moonlight was really cool. There were so many glow worms in the caves and that was something out of this world. We'd like to thank Tom and Amy- both of them were super friendly and nice. Tom told us all about glow worms in such a nice and entertaining way and I really enjoyed learning about them. As there were only two teams inc. us, we got a lot if attention and help throughout the tour (it was my second time kayaking so needed some help from the hosts and my kayak partner). Thanks so much!

β β β β β I must say felt a bit expensive while booking but it's worth it especially for first time kayakers like me. Our guide Tom was fabulous. The experience, of heading into caves and sitting beneath so many glow worms, is something I'll cherish. Been to other similar experiences but one cannot get any closer to these astonishing creatures.
