β β β β β WARNING - battery life on version 1.0 is not as listed on the battery matrix. Although these lights are incredibly bright and well designed (mostly), the batteries do not live up to the listed run times. I have two 2-cell batteries and two 4-cell batteries being that I purchased two Alpha and two X2 light sets. I have tracked the performance over quite a few rides and noted the following:
* batteries fully drain in about 60-75% of specified matrix runtime
* once the battery indicates between 40 to 30% charge remaining, the lights can no longer cycle through their various light intensities, remaining only at a low output.
* battery charge dissipates if left plugged into a light even when not in operation and therefore no load present.
The battery matrix isnβt showing an accurate picture of battery performance. With that in mind, I have requested further information from Gloworm in the form of graphs showing battery voltage over time at the standard (low, medium, high) lumen outputs to accurately show how long the lights will maintain the specified output. Although this request has been made on a couple occasions, it has sadly been ignored - that in itself is not impressive. One would think Gloworm had extensively tested their batteries before charting the battery matrix.
In conclusion, I would rate the overall design and the lights at a 4 out of 5. I had put forward a simple design idea for a quick thumb wheel connection to use on the handlebar brackets to make swapping lights easier and quicker for us who use then on various bikes. Other than that, the design is great. The batteries I would rate at 2 out of 5 since they do not remotely live up to their advertised runtime per charge. Sadly, I would rate customer service at 1. When I initially purchased an Alpha light set, it was delivered with a different battery than what was shown and specified online. It was a struggle to have Gloworm admit to the misrepresentation before offering a solution and a replacement battery.
I know they have updated their product line to version 2.0, and I am hoping this update represents a higher quality battery that performs as per the times listed in the battery matrixβs. If that is the case, I would say these are some of the best lights available for nighttime cycling. Otherwise, be forewarned you may have issues on longer rides.
