★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This 1.4km (25 min) track around a reserve with a meandering stream is a hidden local gem, and is especially good on windy days when lakeshore walks are unpleasant or forest walks are unsafe. Walk the track clockwise for the best views. Before 1997, when the land was bought by the Waiau Habitat Enhancement Trust, this reserve was farmland, and the banks of the creek were being broken down by stock. The creek is a significant trout fishery and one of the few surviving examples of a meandering stream in the area—most were replaced with straight ditches and canals as land was developed for farming. Most of the native plants you’ll see here today have been propagated and planted by local volunteers, since the original vegetation did not survive grazing. The reserve is a wonderful place to see swallows skimming the water as they hunt for insects and to get a glimpse of native skinks basking in the sun.
