JF Kennedy Memorial Park - Castor Bay

The Kennedy Park WWII Installations Preservation Trust

The gun emplacements and tunnels you now see at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park are the remnants of a 6-inch gun battery constructed during 1941 and 1942 as part of Auckland's World War II defences.

Castor Bay was one of three gun batteries whose purpose was to defend the northern approaches to the Rangitoto Channel; the others were at Whangaparaoa and Motutapu.

Cool walk with stunning views. Interesting to see the tunnels. The stairs are a great workout but it also seems very private

It’s within Auckland city. Choose a time during sunset- and take a walk upto cliff stair case . It will be one of the precious moments.

The lookout is great. Gives you a wide spacious view of the sea. Awesome spot to get good silhouette of Rangitoto. The park is clean and wide too. The pillboxes where they used to install guns are amazing historical landmarks. This is the place where you will find the "stairs of doom." Sometimes you will find people running up and down the stairs as a part of their workout program. It's quite a climb that stairs though. The sea shore is not so good. Stay on the elevated part, I would say.

Multiple ways to get here either from Castor Bay beach area or one of the access points (including the main entrance) on Beach Road. Really large park with beautiful views of the Hauraki Gulf along the edge of the park. There is a walkway (Kennedy Park Walkway) that joins the park to Castor Bay beach area. The playground is near the parking lot and there is a path from the parking area to the battery where you can see the gun emplacements. Following the path further leads you to a staircase which goes down to the beach and is used by people for exercise. There are also other WWII facilities in the area. Not much tree cover in the park so not ideal for really hot sunny days. It does have a lot of open space so nice for a run around.

The staircase of doom - a Bali like steep staircase by the seaside. This must be auckland's worst kept secret, a good getaway from the overcrowded takapuna beach. Many fitness enthusiast loves to run up and down the stairs... so, if u feel like a leg day, time to take the challenge.

A refreshing view to walk around. It has a touch of our New Zealand history used after the start of World War II. This battery bay was part of a nationwide coastal defence system and played a key part in Auckland’s WWII Defences.

The beach is great, and dogs are allowed. There are many steps to climb going down onto the beach and pretty gruelling climbing back up to the top!! Beach is wonderful for walking dogs!!

Great place to walk your dog, find out about how we played a role in the war, and a play ground for children. Great views of the bays. Stairs down to the beach are currently out of order, due to storm.
