★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Kirikitiroa, a fortified Pa whakairo (carved Pa) was situated between what is now London Street and Bryce Street. Its defences were formed by the steep riverbank cliffs, a small swampy gully to the south and a deep ditch constructed on the westward side. The ditch was lined with carved palisade posts and manuka fencing. Inside the Pa carved structures included low pitched thatched domestic dwellings, and storage pits for food, agricultural implements and weapons. These structures and the surface features of the Pa itself were destroyed during development of Hamilton City. Little detail is known about the original layout of the Pa. However, excavations undertaken during the development in the area have uncovered shell middens and soil structures associated with the original cultivations of kumara and other crops around the Pa."
