Lots of bird life to watch on a very flat gentle trail and a picturesque lake - surrounded by farm land and native forest. The kids loved the observation hut along the 300m of boardwalk. Inside is a list of all the birds to look for. This trail is for feet and buggies only - no bikes or dogs - which is quite apt for a wildlife trail.

Lovely place to walk. Easy flat walk - just one little hill to climb if you want to go right to the end.

A beautiful, well kept and serene reserve with looks of birdlife to see! Loved walking on boardwalks through this reserve. A lot of locals come here so expect some traffic. Also local fishing competitions happen here. Lovely experience!

A bit of a hidden gem near Rotorua, a beautiful walkway through native forest to a wetland where you can spot lots of native animals such as tui, fantail, pukeko, swan, geese, heron and coots.

a beautiful walk around the lake, peaceful, gentle easy going, home to bush, birds, stunning vistas. Loved the hut lookout through which one can sit to watch the birds incognito. Just wish there was more seating for disabled walkers

Fairly small parking area. Nice walk beside the lake, a mix of gravel and boardwalk that goes for about 2kms. Toilets are located near the end of the track. Wheelchair accessible path. You can swim in this lake, there is a good spot at the end of the walk. Plenty of waterbirds to see. We have seen dabchicks here as well as spotless crakes.

Lake Ōkareka is popular with water skiers, swimmers, boaties and walkers. Lake Ōkareka is one of the smaller Rotorua lakes and is situated among picturesque hills, native forest and wetland reserves. The walkway starts from a Council lakeside reserve on Acacia Road, and continues for approximately 2.5km around the shore to the outlet. The first part of the walkway takes you through native trees and shrubs before entering into a wetlands area that is home to a range of aquatic birds such as swan, geese, pukeko, coot and scaup. A timber boardwalk has been constructed alongside a hide for bird-watching. The walkway and composting toilets are pushchair and wheelchair accessible as far as Silver Beach, around 2km from the start. From here, the walkway continues to a higher level before descending to the lake outlet. The return walk takes about an hour and a half, and showcases native vegetation, farmland, beach, lake and wetland scenery, expansive views and wildlife. Bicycles and dogs are not permitted on the walkway. Getting there: Lake Ōkareka is located 9km southeast of Rotorua. Follow Tarawera Road to Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and take a left onto Ōkareka Loop Road. Once you reach the lake, turn right onto Acacia Road. The walkway starts from a lakeside reserve on Acacia Road and continues for approximately 2.5km around the shore to the outlet.
