Awesome walk. I start at the beach, go up the hill (bit steep and exposed but worth it for the views), explore the bunkers, down the hill to the end of the walkway and back to Makara beach via the coast. Lots of wildlife and great views.

This will be one of my go to hikes while staying in Wellington, short (3 hours round trip by you can do it quicker if you want) I get an uber for $35 there, and a lift from a friendly local (despite covid - offer to wear a mask if you want a +ve response) back to Wellington.

Really nice walk, challenging on the way up, but worth it for the views. Takes about 3hrs to do the full circuit back along the beach. Would be a really nice picnic lunch destination. Heaps of families swimming at the beach at the start on a nice day.

Love this place, there were a lot of vehicles when we visited but was able to find a car park. Walked the dogs along the southern beach walkway, not a difficult walk at all and the dogs loved it. We walked far enough to see the South Island and then headed back. The weather was ideal and the dogs had a lot of fun. People we met along the walk were friendly. It would have been nice if the cafe there was still open, just felt like a drink and snack but we headed to Kilbirnie for coffee and food.

This is a great escape from the city. It is really exposed so if the weather is windy or wet it can be really unpleasant. That being said, on a nice day it's just spectacular. Go and enjoy, the cafe at Makara is also great, just check they are open as their hours vary seasonally.

Great place to bring kids and enjoy beautiful coastal views!

Great place to take the family for a short-medium pace walk. Beware as the majority of the walk is on a stoney beach, so make sure to wear appropriate footwear.

Stunning. Doc website says the track is a 6.6km loop. The signage on site says 8kms which is more accurate. We did 9.5kms in 2.5 hrs. If you go left along the rocks at the bottom, you can add some extra distance. The hard bit is uphill at the start with the amazing views. Toilets are at the carpark which has heaps of parks even on a busy day. Cafe located at the carpark too. Heaps of people were fishing for paua and kina in wetsuits and snorkeling.
