Head Chef
Head Chef Bert van de Steeg began his culinary journey in his homeland of the Netherlands completing training and gaining experience in a range of fine dining and Michelin star restaurants.
After relocating to the other side of the world Bert has called New Zealand home for fifteen years spending time in Hamilton and Whitianga before taking up residence in the stunning location of Queenstown where he was Executive Chef of Stoneridge Estate.
Bert joined the Malo team in July 2018 and is looking forward to working with the abundance of seasonal fresh produce on offer in the region. Bert describes his methods as classic yet modern with a focus on rustic flavours using honest quality ingredients. Bert’s new menu includes simple and well-executed dishes while also being textural and bold. This year, you’ll see Bert develop an international menu with European and Dutch influences while still incorporating amazing New Zealand and local cuisine the restaurant has become renowned for.
Bert is excited to be living locally in Havelock North with his wife and two children saying the area provides so much inspiration in the way of culinary delights.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ You gotta do the fillet aged. Just so soft and flavorful. My son had venison rack which was so delicious. Wine selection was excellent and also local spotlighted so had a lovely red. Great ambiance and staff were awesome.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the best restaurants I ever went to. Some of the food is Michelin star quality, except it's slightly bigger portions than fine dining. All in all you get a great value for money. My only complaint would be them changing the menu more frequently, so that coming back to try new things is possible more often.
Edit: Thanks for the response. Actually it seemed the menu got a big update literally just a few days after my review. :)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a quite cozy restaurant in the center of Havelock North, easy to find, plenty of parking outside and next to a Hotel.
I had dinner at Malo on Easter Saturday night. Arrived without a booking and was greeted and offered a seat without a problem.
The food selection was pretty good (I ended up choosing a fish) as well as the selection of local wines. I chose an Affogato dessert to finish the dinner and have to say it was delicious.
Another star goes to the service that was very good, fast and professional.
The only thing I found not that great were the prices. Everything was a bit towards the upper side of the scale. Yes, I know, I was paying for the quality and no complains there. However you can expect to pay prices similar of a good restaurant in Parnell (Auckland), for example.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Just hopped in car and just had to do a review on Malo Restaurant!!! Thank you to the chefs who made the food so exquisite!!! Everything and I mean everything was well made, mouth watering and jist cooked to perfection!!
The wait staff!!! What can I say? From when me and my husband walked in, they had their A-Game on!! Customer service was just on point and so sweet and knowledgeable with the food and drinks. The wait staff is what made my night eating here!! Lovely, bubbly and all round beautiful down to earth personalities shined through the masks!!!
I will without a doubt recommend coming to eat here 2000% percent to get the freshest food, and the most amazing service!
