★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What you'd expect from a Standard class DOC hut. Sadly the dunny doesn't have a view. Plenty of space for tents. Look for kaka, kakariki, and bellbirds nearby. Cosy once the fire gets going.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great little hut perched high on a ridge. Only 9 bunks so can fill quickly, but there are a few flat places in the long grass to pitch a tent (best not to pitch on the heli pad area).
We walked out north through the Mangamate Stream. There had been a bit of rain over night but the stream was still clear. Nonetheless the stream was swift and deep in places. The last few crossings were difficult and technical.
The trail is very overgrown, you have to watch confidently for markers. Also lots of stinging nettles and Toitoi (cutty grass), especially on the lower section. Wear your highest gaiters.
