Almost drove past it but made the correct decision to stop. WOW it really was amazing, so rich in history and being to walk around a great tra k and see what it was like all those years ago. It's the best one of its type I've seen on the coast and truesly insist you go see it. Kids were free and we paid $10 per adult. Take cash as there was a honesty box.

Hard to describe. Yes it is nice place to go with kids. Nice little walk in the bush following old tracks and going through tunnels. But is it worth the 10 dollars fees not sure.

We stopped at Mitchells Gully Gold mine, the rain was still managing to hold off. This Gold Mine showed a number of tunnels dug through the gold bearing sand. There was a water wheel which was used to crush the ore so that it could be treated with Mercury to extract the gold as an amalgam. You walk along several tunnels in the pitch dark, so mobile phone is useful to light your way. As well as the tunnels there are passages through the trees for the railway line to meander and for you to walk along. On one of the tracks a very obliging fantail stopped to have one, or more, photographs taken. It obliged by fanning its tail and generally looking very cute.

One of the best experiences I ever had in New Zealand! You get direct and historic information right from a very friendly gold miner and it is all historic there. The actual gold mine it self transfers you into a past time. Those 10$ are worth the experience, cause you see so much and you can explore the whole mine by yourself. The Track take about 0.5-1 h to walk through. If you watch carefully you are even able to spot some glow worms in the caves!

This was one of our most fun experiences in the South Island. And most affordable. There are mine caves you can explore down, where you'll find glow worms hanging out. There's a trail to walk with all kinds of amazing native plants, trees, birds, lizards and bugs... Plus, all the mining equipment which has to be 150 years old. It's breathtaking and curious and will make you feel like you're on an adventure!!

Self guided tour through old mine tunnels and passed the water driven crusher. Got a little of the history from the owner. $10 per adult, takes about 20 mins. Quite interesting but you need your own torch and must be prepared to duck through the tunnels.

Very good location and it's a good example to know how was in a working gold mine in the past. We been there in the raining day but still had enjoying time around. The entrance where we buying the tickets have is very small but they makes like a museum and was impressed how many thinks I learn in few metre square. Definitely I recommend if you driving around just stop for minimum one hour and visit this amazing place. Unfortunately is not suitable for wheelchairs people, but they still enjoyed the view around the open space museum garden.

The kids had an awesome time exploring all the different mine tunnels. Got to see heaps of cave wetas and glow worms... Even during the day. Would definitely recommend a visit. We will be visiting again.
