Beautiful walk through the forest to amazing views, not too difficult to walk and definitely a highlight of visiting Tekapo.

Lovely, nice and short 8km track up to a wonderful Lookout point. You should do the track clockwise to get a better view of the lake.

A must to walk this track. The view at the summit and the grass is so adorable. Good scenic point to take pictures and the heavy wind drives every living and wildlife hard to go across.

Amazing views in all directions. Taking a walk along the well-marked trails is a fantastic way to get an appreciation of this beautiful area. Some paths can also be explored on horseback.

Beautiful spot with scenic view points. We completed the full circuit in roughly 2.5hrs, stopping for photos along the way. The quickest way to the top is via the forest which is about 30mins to the summit — at which point you can turn around and go back the way you came for a 1 hour-ish round-trip if you prefer a shorter walk. The lakeside route is longer but also much more interesting and scenic (in my opinion). If you have the time and fitness, do the full circuit.

Get your exercise and soak in the 360 degree views of the Lakes and Mackenzie Basin flats with this lovely walk. The complete walk is a 8.9km loop track. Start past Tekapo Hot Springs if approaching from the Lake Tekapo lakefront. It keeps winding uphill till you are at Mt John Observatory summit. If you If you retrace your path from the summit, its about 3.1km in total. You can stop for a refreshing coffee at Astro Cafe at Mt John Observatory summit, if before 5PM. After that Mt John Observatory is only open to Guests signed up for the night sky stargazing experience. It's beautiful any which way you look. Apart from Lake Tekapo you also see Lake Alexandrina and the much smaller Lake McGregor. On a clear day you catch sight of the Aoraki range as well. When you look down at Tekapo and see how small the CHurch of Good Shephard looks, you know you have had a good walk and a good climb. Can be breezy and therefore get cold easily at the top, have a warm layer and plenty of water

This is a rewarding leg stretcher on a good day when the short track to the summit is open. Due to tree work it was closed this time and the option was the longer, lakeside walk. With a nor'wester wind whipping up the lake this proved to be a good walk-as-far-as-you-want-to alternative. Great for photos too.

Started from the bottom and walked up to Mt John which was great. In the forest and nice and shaded. Once you get near the top there are some dirt stairs if you feel like a bit of a leg burner. Views from the top are fantastic and then it’s a lovely stroll back around the long way with the amazing blue lake Tekapo. Great fun and we did it in just under three hours (not including stops for gazing) as we were taking our time and enjoying the view.
