About Nevalea Alpacas
We are Leonie and Neville Walker and our journey into the amazing world of alpacas began in July 2007 with the purchase of 2 females with cria at foot, followed by a few more, until we now farm over 950 alpacas. Nestled in the hills of the King Country on the adventure highway 16kms north of Taumarunui we farm these beauties together with our sheep and cattle. Fibre and genetics have always been an interest for us both, having had a sheep stud for several years and also working with stud cattle.
Knitting and design was once an interest which was put in the cupboard until the alpacas came along, then the knitting machine came back out. Having this luxurious fibre with a natural colour pallet of whispery whites, earthy browns and beautiful blacks was very appealing, and we wanted to make the very best use from our alpaca fibre.
Our shearing starts from October, Neville shears all our alpacas, by himself, he has the task mastered to a one man operation and also shears about 200 other alpacas off farm and to date shears all our sheep. We aim to get the fibre off the alpacas and into a usable product before the next shearing time. This stage is exciting and rewarding, following the fibre grown by our baby alpacas and premium fine fibre from the herd through the cycle until it returns back to the farm again in the form of yarn ready to be knitted into garments.
Leonie does all the designing, drafting up the patterns and sets the work for the knitters and completes the finishing. We now operate as a family business, proud to have our eldest daughter, Kellie working with us, not only knitting the garments, but working on the business with us. The next generation also lend a head, assisting in training the alpacas.
We produce designer garments for women, men, children and babies, and have a large range of accessories and homeware.
Proudly 100% New Zealand grown and made.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was super fun!! Both my partner and I enjoyed it very much. The owners Leonie and Neville were really friendly, skilled and knowledgeable about alpacas (obviously). It was really lovely of Leonie that she offered to take photos of my partner and myself with the alpacas on the hill. She even showed us how to take selfies with the cuties (my partner and I are neither a photo person?) but anyway it was a lovely experience. It was one of the highlights in our trip. We are so glad that we found this little gem on our way down to the snow mountain. Thank you xx ❤️❤️❤️

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What a wonderful one and a half hours we spent with these beautiful animals. Leonie and Neville are wonderful hosts and very happy to share their knowledge and beautiful babies. We took Olsen and Noel for a walk around part of the farm, patted many, laughed at the babies’ hi jinx and finished with a lovely picnic supplied by Leonie and Neville, surrounded by alpacas, under an oak tree.
If you’re near Taumarunui, pop it on your list of things to do, you won’t be disappointed.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What a beautiful day?! We're lucky to find this place during a school holiday as the kids needed something new to explore and it was beyond our expectations!! The lady who owns it is very friendly and helpful. She helped us taking photos for us with the alpacas.
The picnic idea is extraordinary- we loved it not only the kids!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Saw this place on the way down to Ohakune and made sure we popped in on the way back. The most basic package is under $30 for two adults and you get to feed and (if they let you) pet these fuzzy, funny little things in a field. It's even better with kids (5+). An inexpensive and fun stop that I'd recommend to anyone who hasn't seen them up close before.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What an awesome experience to walk with the Alpacas and feeding the baby ones too! A must do families of all ages and it was thoroughly enjoyed by the kids of different ages. The Ultimate Alpaca Experience needs to be booked online before to ensure availability. Lots of photos opportunities and the staff were amazing.
