★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Previous reviews about the drive were concerning but it was short and manageable at a slow speed. The owners were very aware of it and are waiting on someone to do maintenance so I expect that this will be resolved shortly, perhaps on the 2nd of Feb as there was a sign saying access is closed that day. There was adequate parking on a busy day, so that was nice! The closest place for cash-out is the Maketu dairy/post office.
The diversity and quantity of marine life is really a wonder - the only comparable beach I've seen is Goat Island, NZ's oldest marine reserve. The beachcombing is great, lots of stuff you'd normally only see on older folk's shelves or museums. I'd like to see a geologist's overview of the volcanic rock there too. There were a few people out there collecting kina on the rocks and signs of a healthy snapper population.
It's also great for your average beach enjoyment. It's easy to spend hours there (BRING SUNBLOCK) and there is a lot of space to find a quiet spot. Don't forget your litter. Despite private ownership of the access, marine life are far more likely to get to your trash before the owners or a good samaritan. It takes a collective effort to keep this place relatively unspoiled for the future.
All in all, it is 100% worth a visit. Bring sunblock, cash, water and a bag to bring your trash home in.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Love it here, another beach side neighbouring maketu beach. Cyclist and pedestrian are free but those driving need few dollars for entry. It was quiet, good for exploring, and photography

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A special place. Private beach. You pay 5$ for car entry.
Very quiet and away from the typical hype of other beaches.
Fishing and gathering kaimoana.
Beautiful place to relax and rejuvenate ??

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful long beach with wide, soft sand, and good swimming and surfing. It closes at 6PM daily (closes at 5 PM in the winter months) and has to be accessed with a privately maintained driveway at a cost of $5 per vehicle, per entry. It’s very much worth the small fee! If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, there is an access ramp at the parking lot, and you can drive along the beach, too! (Don’t try it if you don’t have a good 4-wheel drive...the sand is pretty loose in many spots and you will probably get stuck...) Amazing cliffs and scenic rocky beach along the northern part.
It is never crowded, but the parking lot can get full on weekends or holidays.
It is most definitely one of our favorite beaches in New Zealand!!
Plan to spend several hours here!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This beach is a hidden gem. Unless you had been there before or going with friends whom had been there previously, you would likely drive on by and miss something special. There is a small charge administrated by the land owners whose land you need to drive through for access. But In my opinion is well worth the $5.00 per vehicle. However no toilet facilities are available in case anyone is wondering.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a private beach, $5 entry via honesty box for a private car. The track to the beach is passable for 2WD car but quite bumpy and very dusty. Good beach for swimming and the kids had lots of fun and and around the water with rocks and rock pools to explore nearby.
Downsides is no toilet facilities and also get quite a lot of 4WD vehicles cruising up and down the beach which can be disconcerting for a newcomer. Just remember it's private, keep an eye on the little ones and roll with it. It is a great swimming beach.
There does not appear to be lifeguard as such present.
Nearest shops are at Maketu.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The beach itself is great, good for the family etc but the owners of access to the beach placing rules for a public space is questionable...
But I'm also happy that the people on the beach didn't care and did what they wanted anyways was refreshing to see also.
So yeah, if you can hide what they don't want you to do and get away with it then you'll have a lovely day.
