About ON MOUNTAIN
Originally founded in 1982 selling Ski, Wintersport, and Bike products sourced from Europe and the United States, On Mountain has grown from a passion for the outdoors and travel. Hiking, Skiing, Surfing, Camping, Biking, or even a 10 minute walk around the block! Connecting with the outdoors is what we are about.
Our love for ski and the outdoors was born from spending time enjoying the backcountry while working in high end ski shops in Aspen, Colorado aka Ski Bumming. Since returning to New Zealand in the early 80s we have focused on supplying the cutting edge and technical outdoor product we loved so much overseas.
The world has changed a lot since the 80s! Our focus is now on enhancing peoples wellbeing by encouraging time and energy being spent in the outdoors. The challenges of modern life are just that – challenges. And by connecting with nature and the outdoors, those challenges all seem a little less daunting and manageable.
The question for us became how can we supply products to get people out there enjoying it, while still being good global citizens. This has lead to the search for the best quality, sustainable and unique outdoor product available in our Wellington based shop.
We stand by and use everything on this website and strive to work with companies that take their social responsibilities seriously (check out our blog posts on why we love our brands). While it’s not possible to get this right every time, our goal and direction is clear, we will keep walking this path everyday.
Leave the screen behind for a few hours… days… why not even months! And schedule some time to explore and connect. We think this is up there with oxygen and water - and we have the gear to help you get into it!
Check out our little outdoor shop online or come down and see us if you’re in or around Wellington. We’re located in the Woolstore building on Thorndon Quay and have the Cafe Le Marche Francias right outside the front door.
The curation of products here is done in conjunction with companies who are taking meaningful steps to be responsible corporate citizens. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Showed up to buy sunglasses at 12.30pm on a Wednesday and the shop was "closed" for the day for annual stock take. Was told I couldn't buy anything as the system wouldn't allow them to change things later. No notification of this online so a waste of my time.
Get a better system or do the stock take outside of operating hours or at least notify online that you are effectively closed.
