On Top Backpackers - Central Dunedin

Great spot right in the heart of town but just off to the side so to speak so not noisy at all... in fact Dunedin isn't really noisy ... just a 5 minute walk to the Octagon and 2 minutes to George St. Has a really cosy kitchen and lounge upstairs with big leather couches and a TV... The entire place kitchen, lounge, bathrooms, showers and the accommodation is spotless... they have a daily routine carried out by staff not backpackers working for rent like a lot of places I've stayed at.... highly recommended ?

Matt and his team are welcoming and accomodating. The room I stayed in was nice, warm and comfortable. Location is convenient in town centre but nice and quiet.

A hostel experience we will never forget! Warm and friendly welcome especially with a last minute booking. The staff bring this place alive and the place is so homey. Suitable for all ages. Environmentally friendly but nothing was uncomfortable. Enjoyed the free pool and the bar had excellent music taste. The bar tenders were very fun but also very caring people which we all appreciated ? Great location for going to the Octogon but also for a quiet nights sleep (or not in our case). Was surprised by the $20 bond but worked out fine in the end. We noticed as we left that the ceiling was a bit sweaty in the morning so you should probably get that fixed but it didn't change our positive experience. Feels like our Dunedin home

Myself and a friend stayed in a deluxe room. Although the room was well presented and clean. We unfortunately felt very short changed as we specifically asked for 2 beds but we were only given 1 small double bed. I went back to the front desk and spoke with the lovely lady who checked us in. She kept on apologising to us and said she would call her manager and either put us in another room or give us asome extra bedding so we could make a bed up on the floor. I explained that we had a wedding to go to and wouldn't be back till late so she could just leave extra bedding in the room or at the door. I never heard anything back from after this so went upstairs and continued to get ready for the wedding. On returning back to the backpackers we had the expectation of having extra bedding waiting for this. This was not the case and in consequence of this I ended up having to sleep on the cold floor wrapped in whatever clothes I could find. In the morning I was asked by an older gentleman at the front desk how everything was and I explained that everything was okay except for the bed situation. Himself and another older lady laughed as I told them that I had to sleep on the floor, and his comment was "were u not capable of sharing a bed" and then he continued to chuckle away to himself. This made me feel absolutely humiliated by the whole situation and all I wanted to do was leave as fast as I could. The gentleman seemed to talk in such away that made me feel like he was trying to put the blame on to me because we had cancelled 1 of 2 nights of accommodation with them. He said because we cancelled our first night he had no choice but to move us into a room with 1 bed not 2 like specifically asked for. He continued to say while laughing "I thought 1 double bed would be good enough but obviously not for some" As someone myself that works in the hospitality industry I am absolutely appalled that anyone could treat another person like that. I don't like to leave bad reviews on anything but I feel this needs to be shared as the gentleman today wasn't even one bit worried about the situation at all and didn't even say sorry or anything. Definitely wish I hadn't booked there as I feel my money and support of the business could have been more appreciated elsewhere

A well organised hostel located conveniently near the centre of Dunedin. The rooms (I stayed in a six person dorm) were spacious, confortable and catered to all tech needs. Shared shower and bathroom facilities were very good, tidy and clean. The hostel had a nice common room/kitchen and a balcony with great views. The staff were friendly and very helpful. There is pay and display parking available next to the hostel. Two nights cost me $54 (light breatfast included), so I consider that very reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place and would stay here again.

Don't trust these guys to honor a booking, especially if your going there during an event. They will ditch you or try to rip you off.

This an awesome backpackers right in the center of Dunedin one block off the Octagon and right over the road from the Town Hall. For me the stairs were a challenge after several trips up and down. Room was clean and well presented. Staff were friendly and helpful. Loved chilling in the Pool bar before sleeping

Treated like second class citizens and not a welcoming owner to say the least. Owner let coming into the room unannounced, when there was next to no noise. Would recommend anywhere else in Dunedin.
