★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lockdown prevented me from travelling down to Nelson in August and after contacting this place many times they refused to give me a refund and they had the worst customer service ever!!!! I would not recommend this place purely based on how rude they are and incompatible with plans. They advertised a great refund policy online but I still have not received my refund. Not happy.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Worst backpacking experience. DO NOT BOOK HERE!! Avoid at all cost.
Service - disgusting.
Rooms- dirty, cold and sheets were not cleaned. Furnisher was broken too.
Locked storage for luggage - seen unlocked and unattended multiple times.
Bathroom- ladies shower was blocked and toilet was blocked with a handtowel inside. Only 1 working toilet. Handtowels provided were disgusting, and even soap dispenser was broken so no soap.
Kitchen - was okay but the "breakfast provided" is a total waste of time and money.
Check-in & check-out - early check-in not actually provided as stated on website.
In summary, 0 stars. The website, owner and receptionist are dishonest. The place is extremely run down and seems like no one cares for the place, let alone the customers/visitors. I don't want anyone to have to pay out of their pocket and experience this place like I did. Wish I'd read the reviews & heeded them before booking.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The pool and jacuzzi is nice but the manager tried to bribe me with beers for a 5 star review and refused to give us a refund with a false claim, and having to deal with bed bugs every second day was hard work. It’s not nice being screamed at 5 minutes before you have to leave the pool area.

I spoke to a woman on the phone who was hostile from the outset. Apparently annoyed by the inconvenience of my call. I was planning to stay two nights, but knew that I'd be arriving late on the first night, and wanted to ask if it was okay for me to be left a key to pickup in the early hours when I arrived. I've arrived during the night in many hostels in the past and have generally found this request isn't a problem.
I was told that the only way I'd be left a key would be if I booked an extra night prior to the first night of my stay. I still have no idea where this requirement came from. After a confused conversation trying to get to the bottom of this reasoning, I was told not to bother booking at all, because it was a hassle. Obviously booking customers into your own hostel is just too much effort to be worthwhile.
The person I spoke to was rude and confrontational throughout. Absolutely avoid.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ You'll not meet a worse hostel manager. The other reviews aren't exaggerating this woman is vile. She screams and swears in guests faces, is drunk or otherwise intoxicated most of the time, very aggressive and threatening. We loved the pool and people there so stayed for 7 weeks but the place had bedbugs the entire time that she refuses to deal with properly. Speaking with previous guest they have been there over a year. Don't believe the good reviews, they've been bribed out of people with a box of beers.

Be careful, already when you call or arrive. You might not be very welcomed and instead of a nice smile you get fire, or eaten straight away.
She’s making a lot of things very complicated and is talking to her guests in a very unprofessional and rude way.
Especially bed bugs is a really bad problem in the hostel. In many of the rooms people were bitten a lot and they “cleaned” the rooms minimum 3 times
Still enjoyed my stay but mostly because of the people and the pool

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Budget friendly, eclectic and fun hostel with all the amenities and great vibes! The pool and spa was a good opener for interacting with the other guests. The staff were wonderful and the bathrooms immaculate. Highly recommend.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The good: Great hospitality given by the receptionist/host named Ruth, very pleasant and professional. Loved the pool and outdoor set up was welcoming.
The not so good: The spa needed a good clean as there was a unidentified ring around the spa, there was an unpleasant smell lingering around the top bathroom, but the clear winner for my two star rating are the abundance of unpaying guests for Paradiso Backpacker's - their bed bugs. Absolutely relentless parasites who's itch still taunts me days after we've left the hostel, yuck!
Otherwise the rest of the facilities available to guests were good for the price we paid.
