The current PlaceMakers operating structure developed following the 1988 merger between Fletcher Merchants and Winstone Trading Limited (that included Odlins and Zip Trading).
FLETCHER MERCHANTS LIMITED
In 1910 James Fletcher established a joinery factory and began Fletchers long association with the timber industry. Over 70 years, Fletchers became one of the largest timber merchants. In 1958, Fletchers expanded into building materials merchandising by purchasing a number of companies including McCallum and Co Limited, HC Kitchen Limited, Felvins Limited, Ellis and Burnand Limited and several branches of John Burns Limited.
Fletcher Merchants, as it became, introduced the hardware supermarket / one stop shop concept into building materials merchandising in New Zealand and in 1981 they adopted a new trading brand - PlaceMakers.
THE WINSTONE GROUP
The Winstone name goes back as far as 1864 and over time grew a reputation supplying an extensive range of materials to the building and construction markets. Winstone Trading Limited was formed in 1984 and over five years grew to provide national coverage by purchasing a number of smaller businesses including Odlins and Dudding Brothers.
The merger of Fletcher Merchants Limited and Winstone Trading Limited in 1988 produced the largest and only nationwide building materials chain in New Zealand.

β β β β β Astonishing experience at this store. When asked for a particular type of screw bought previously from Placemakers and bringing one with me to show exactly what was required, the staff member took one look and exclaimed - 'that's going to be a mission'. He then vanished for a lengthy period of time before emerging with the wrong product and proclaiming - "I don't know much about nails!" Are these guys for real???

β β β β β Staff and product range is orientated more towards trade sales. The counter staff did not appear to be DIY customer service trained or able to help with information on some of their products. There was only the 2 of us in the place at the time and we did feel like we were disturbing them. They did contact their other Wairau branch to see if someone could help us to provide more information on the products they had on display. We subsequently went to Wairau and found similar lack of product knowledge but they kindly gave us contact details of their suppliers so we could phone them to answer our questions on Monday.

β β β β β Terrible ripoff place. I was short on 140x45mm h3. 2. I had bought it earlier from Bunnings at $8.30 an LM. Coz Bunnings were short so I came to Placemakers and bought 18metres.
Due to timber shortage they charged me $17 an LM. Which is double of Bunnings price.
What a total ripoff they should be ashamed of doing this to customers

β β β β β A great range of building products, some that are not available at the competition. A bit expensive though unless you have a trade account. I tend to use them for the products that are special orders at the competing chains. They have an especially wide range of specialised silicon and adhesive products. They also have a selection of concrete blocks

β β β β β Do not buy here or oreder supplies from this branch. I placed an order for building materials last January 2022, they told me it was going to take a week to arrive, they called me a week later only to find out that they ordered the wrong materials.
They told me that theis system has the wrong description and they were going to try to order the correct ones.
Three weeks later, they told me they are still trying to fix the system and they might get it delivered overnight.
The following day they said that their driver forgot to load the materials, and it might tKe another week from South Auckland, the materials never arrived, I orderthem from Bunnings in the morning and the Materials were there that same afternoon.
Do not go to Placemakers, its not worth the weight and hassle, by the way, there are several employees that when they see people, they walk to the staff room.

β β β β β I ordered some tools and materials, at pick-up, the materials were incorrect, the employee had to make several phone calls due to having the wrong information in their system.
The correct ones were supposed to arrive 4 days later, it has been 18 days and they still don't know when they will be arriving from the factory located in west Auckland.
I ordered them from Mitre 10 Albany, who placed the order from the same factory licated in West Auckland and they were delivered overnight.
Save yourself time and several headaches, do not order from here, ohh the price is better at Mitre 10.
