The current PlaceMakers operating structure developed following the 1988 merger between Fletcher Merchants and Winstone Trading Limited (that included Odlins and Zip Trading).
FLETCHER MERCHANTS LIMITED
In 1910 James Fletcher established a joinery factory and began Fletchers long association with the timber industry. Over 70 years, Fletchers became one of the largest timber merchants. In 1958, Fletchers expanded into building materials merchandising by purchasing a number of companies including McCallum and Co Limited, HC Kitchen Limited, Felvins Limited, Ellis and Burnand Limited and several branches of John Burns Limited.
Fletcher Merchants, as it became, introduced the hardware supermarket / one stop shop concept into building materials merchandising in New Zealand and in 1981 they adopted a new trading brand - PlaceMakers.
THE WINSTONE GROUP
The Winstone name goes back as far as 1864 and over time grew a reputation supplying an extensive range of materials to the building and construction markets. Winstone Trading Limited was formed in 1984 and over five years grew to provide national coverage by purchasing a number of smaller businesses including Odlins and Dudding Brothers.
The merger of Fletcher Merchants Limited and Winstone Trading Limited in 1988 produced the largest and only nationwide building materials chain in New Zealand.

โ โ โ โ โ I've been going here for years and it is one thing a place for the trades when you want materials for a job go here all the advice from friendly staff that know what you want most of the trades know already what they want and are experienced any way it's well set out and the staff are friendly and helpful so if you are looking to build and want good service this is the place for you

โ โ โ โ โ Again reminded of why I never shop here. Service was good (this time) but trolleys in the exit, so you come in, have to exit and re-enter with your trolley. Charged above RRP for the item I needed, like wow poor form. No wonder we go to mitre10 or Bunnings.

โ โ โ โ โ Mostly I have found them very helpful. They helped getting a pallet of gib down from the top of the rack and brought it to the trailer so the sheets could be slid of straight onto it, then picked the other pallet of gib off the floor (different size) so they (12 sheets) could be easily loaded. The Chinese guy I find very easy to deal with. The prices aren't bad either.
