★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A must see or do if you're visiting Whakatane! Stunning views and wonderful birds and a sighting of a kiwi in the wild if you're very lucky. Climb up and run if you want or take it easy and sit down I places to enjoy the view. But take water as there's no place to get it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We were driving through, it's worth the quick stop, right in town and doesn't take long. Nearby were the stairs with local artist painted tiles. Also worth seeing. I enjoyed reading about the rocks history on the nearby plaques..

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the three important historical landmarks in Whakatane. This rock as associated cave was very significant for local Maori before it was partially demolished by early settlers. After WW1 it was made into a war memorial and for a long time there was a waka on a plinth at the base of the rock. The Maori history of this landmark is now much better advertised. There are benches by the arch-way, which is all that remains of the cave, and a memorial rest area on the other side of the rock.
