About Port Waikato Holiday Park
Port Waikato is a beautiful, sleepy, beachy, holiday town on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Dotted with batches and holiday homes Port Waikato features a long sweeping surf beach, acres of sand dunes and calm estuary waters surrounding the wide river mouth.Port Waikato is the place where New Zealand’s longest River - the mighty Waikato - finally enters the Tasman sea. The Waikato River is perhaps best known for creating the majestic Huka Falls near its source at Lake Taupo.
Originally a fishing port and shipping yard its peaceful location, long sweeping beaches and sand dunes have seen Port Waikato become the popular holiday destination it is today.
Featuring the characteristic black sand of the west coast, the Port Waikato beach runs from the popular surfing and swimming spot of Sunset Beach to the sand spit at the mighty river's mouth. There are acres of sand dunes to explore and great fishing to be had from the beaches and river banks.
Just inland from the coast the river mouth forms sweeping tidal estuaries. These calm waters and sand flats offer fun for young families looking for a safe place for littlies to splash and play, paddling in your canoe, waterski or just potter about in your dingy with a fishing rod.
The coast line has much to offer too. Take a walk around the rocks at LOW TIDE and explore for fossils.
For the adventurous a day trip underground to the Nikau Glowworm Caves is a must.
But perhaps Port Waikato’s best feature is its proximity to both Auckland and Hamilton. Only one hour from the Auckland International Airport, Port Waikato is practically on your doorstep. So escape the rat race, get some sand between your toes and discover all the delights that are Port Waikato.

β β β β β Staff were really nice and helpful!
Facilities clean and tidy - the lounge was a bit chilly.
Only thing to mark down is the price for a non powered site as was on the slightly higher side but apart from that was a good stop for the night.
If you donβt know go and check out the sunset on sunset beach - we just saw the name and decided to go not realising how incredible it would be!

β β β β β Really enjoyed our stay in the superior deluxe 1 bdrm cabin. Clean with a very comfortable bed and everything you need provided. Nice strong shower too. Close proximity to the shared facilities as well, including the laundry. Close to sunset beach, easy flat walk 10mins or a short drive away. Great value and a friendly, clean and well organised holiday park.

β β β β β What great place to go camping. Very friendly and helpful staff. Facilities were clean and tidy at all times.
Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that there wasn't much for young children and shower water was often too hard on the little ones. But otherwise 41/2 stars guys. Would highly recommend.

β β β β β We stayed for 2 nights on a powered camp site. We had our large dog with us which was so nice to be able to camp with him too. The staff were wonderful to deal with and the grounds are lovely. All the basic amenities you need when you are camping and wanting to get away from it all! An easy walk to the sand dunes which are awesome fun! The beach is walkable but in the heat it is better to drive as it is a fair way. The only let down is the price...but this seems to be the norm with ALL camp grounds in NZ. $20/person/ night. So for myself, partner and 2 teenage kids it was $80/night just to camp plus $5/night for the dog. Just crazy for a patch of grass...Better off booking 2 campsites next to each other and have twice the room for the same price! Camping has definitely got expensive here! But it won't put me off...not yet anyway ?

β β β β β Value for money! Clean, convenient and comfortable kitchen facilities, clean and spacious bathrooms and laundry. Kitchen had some pots pans, plates,BBQ facility with gas bottle, oven, microwave, fridge , 4 sinks , gas burner hob. Would recommend you carry your own pans, serving spoons and cutlery. We lived in a tent without power point in a good plain land for 1 night. Next time we would like to spend more days and relax here. It was a spacious site for tent and car park. Toilets are well placed across 2 sites. We could hear the ocean roaring while sleeping which felt amazing! There was a nice play park for my toddler. A good family lounge to watch TV. The sunset beach was a km away. Can use body boards in the safe zone.. . Beautiful experience..Sand dunes were close by too. Nice black fine sand. Overall a decent place!
