β β β β β Neat wee bird sanctuary to break up the walk from the lake. Completely free and my daughter enjoyed having a look at some native birds up close!

β β β β β Always a great time when you can see six rare Takahe at one time. Well done. We were privileged to see the adult feeding their chick.

β β β β β I have visited the sanctuary many times over the years and got quite close to the Takahe while feeding this time round!
There is 7 Takahe in the enclosure I'm told as well as other birds on show.
They are a beautiful bird and to think of their history and their numbers, we are privileged to see them.

β β β β β For a free park, this is very good. Some of the exhibits were empty or you couldn't see the birds but there were staff around to help. Good on DOC for having such a place where people can learn about conservation while at the same time looking after vulnerable or injured birds.

β β β β β Free/by donation place to see takahΔ up close! Even if you don't come at feeding time, they're pretty easy to spot - and they don't seem wary of visitors at all, so they'll come right up to the fence.
There are a few other birds as well, but of course the takahΔ enclosure is the highlight.
We came mid-afternoon and were the only ones there, which may have helped with the birds' boldness. If you have a choice, I recommend visiting before the borders fully reopen and it gets super busy!

β β β β β Te Anau Bird Sanctuary is a free (Donation welcome) park to visit to see the rare Takahe birds. There are also other birds to see, but sadly it seems the Morepork owl has sadly passed away today. The kids found the bush camp play area out the back really fun, so make sure you check it out too
