β β β β β There was a sign that said closed.
We went in anyway, because Google said open 24 hours, and the visitor centre lady changed my money so I could enter the gate.
After paying $2 to open the gate for each person we found the observatory to have just 1 adult fish and 1 baby fish and in another tank a fresh water lobster the size of a toe.
Also found the exit gate turns inwards so you can save yourself $2 and go on the exit gate if you desperately want to see 1.1 trout.
Disappointing creepy place.
Go and see the Takahe at the bird sanctuary further down the road, it's free and not a total waste of your time.

β β β β β For the record, I have always been more of a salt water fish guy. Snapper, Grouper, even the occasional flounder if I'm feeling a little lost, but not after happening upon this hidden gem in the deep South. Upon a hard earned entry you are greeted with a stunning vista of majestic trout in their natural habitat.
The trout per square meter ratio was phenomenal in itself, and you are even gifted with a viewing optimizer to really see the true beauty as they glide so effortlessly through the water, as if to mock our own relative clumsiness. I will never be the same after such an experience, and neither will you. I would give more stars, but I need to stay strong and show myself and the world I'm still in control after such a whirlwind encounter.

β β β β β It was a Spiritual experience walking though the gates and entering the trout's domain. My connection with big pink was one I'll look back on in moment of hardship in my life.

β β β β β This is without a doubt THE must-see attraction in Te Anau. As soon as you enter through its mysterious gates, it is as though you have been transported to a new dimension where you begin to truly understand mother nature, seemingly for the first time.
One cannot help but marvel at the wonder of the trout as they glide through the water, almost as if dancing... almost as if sending a subliminal message reminding us how fragile this Earth really is.
I couldn't help but shed a tear as I beared witness to this glorious display of beauty and of bravery.
It certainly was a sight to behold, and a moment im sure will stay with me for life.

β β β β β While looking for a cheaper alternative to the glow worms, we were absolutely thrilled to see there was an opportunity to see some local nature! The fact that this place is open 24/7 is outstanding- very well maintained and considerate of the local tourists. As a note, this only takes coins (any combination of $2) and there are some stairs (not wheelchair accessible, perhaps something they could improve?). There were some very informative facts about the different types of trout. Previous reviews only mentioned 7 trout, you can imagine our shock at seeing 8! Glad to see the conservation effort has been successful. Wholesome day out, so good I made sure to drive the other members of the group to the observatory so they wouldnβt miss it. 5*****

β β β β β Maybe worthwhile for kids.
For the entry rotating gate, you must pull and hold it towards you then insert $2
The guy who went before us couldn't get in after inserting his coin.
In places the viewing glass is scuffed and dirty.

β β β β β PULL before trying to push through the turnstile. I wish I had known that before I lost $2.
I then lost another $2 when I successfully made it inside to see five sad fish in a sad aquarium that's fed by fresh water.
