Unique to Aoteroa New Zealand, Quartz, Museum of Studio Ceramics is the only dedicated museum for studio ceramics in this country and is the largest and most diverse public ceramic display. The Museum was opened in November 2015 by Rick Rudd, a renowned studio potter, because he saw an absence of permanent collections on show in the major galleries and museums in Aotearoa New Zealand. Quartz was initially established to house his substantial collection. This collection comprised approximately one hundred works by New Zealand potters (the movers and shakers of their time), from the early 20th century to works of contemporary makers.  His collection included almost two hundred of his own works, from the first piece he made in 1968, and illustrative works from throughout his career to date. Rick also had a small international collection (approx. 40 pieces) which included works by: Lucie Rie, Shoji Hamada, and Janet Mansfield. Since setting up the museum Rick has added more works in each collection.

Works from the Rick Rudd and Simon Manchester Collections are loaned to other museums and galleries around the country for special exhibitions.

“Quartz, raised to a red heat, quenched in water and ground to a powder is a most valuable material to potters both in clays and in glazes.” Bernard Leach, A Potter’s Book, Faber & Faber 1940

This wonderful collection of ceramics should be on everyone’s list of things to see in Whanganui. The variety of shapes and forms is amazing. One can only marvel at the creativity of the artists who made them.

The owner and Curator of this collection is a fabulous man! I spent about 90 min wondering around in his collection of pottery and was absolutely enthralled. He has such a wide mix of art here. I loved every minute and will definitely go back again.

Every town has a hidden gem. This is Whanganui's. It is criminal that this place is not as visited as it should be. Rick, resident artist and founder of the museum, is an absolute treat to talk to, and you can spend well over an hour just talking with him if that's your thing. His knowledge of New Zealand potters is incredible. The museum has several rooms over two floors, with the ground floor being wheelchair accessible. You'll find collections of works from New Zealand and Whanganui itself, as well as a rotating exhibition downstairs. As of writing, it hosts the Emerging Practitioner in Clay Award, run by Rick from little old Whanganui. Upstairs focuses on specific potters, but also holds a room dedicated to the collection from a recently passed potter that was donated in its entirety to the museum. There are stunning works everywhere you look. This is the kind of place that should be making Whanganui a destination, rather than a stop along the way. If you do visit, consider buying a teapot (some are even practical to use). If not, leave a donation. You'll see why Quartz is a must-see.

This is well worth a visit. The owner Rick Rudd has an amazing collection of pottery / ceramics from most of NZ's top potters. Absolutely beautiful. Rick is very clearly an extremley accomplished artist with absolutely stunning works of his own on display. A very generous gesture letting us enjoy this stunning collection.
