Much of the river is entrenched in spectacular gorges, which together with the surrounding rugged terrain, mean that access points are limited. The headwaters flow through undisturbed native bush, while further downstream the scenery changes to plantation forestry and farmland. To preserve the unique character of the upper river, a water conservation order was put in place in 2004.
State Highway 5, which runs from Taupo in central North Island to Napier on the East Coast, and which crosses the river just east of Tarawera village, conveniently divides the river into two sections.
The section upstream of the bridge is favoured by anglers, trampers and those wanting gentle rafting on Grade II water.
Downstream of the bridge, more precisely below the Department of Conservation’s Everett camp site, the river changes to Grade III rapids and then to Grade IV and V, running through steep-sided gorges, before returning to gentler water as it approaches the coast.
The largest tributary, the Waipunga, rises on the Rangitaiki Plains east of Taupo, and follows State Highway 5 before entering many kilometres of bush-clad gorge. It has a reputation for large trout and is also known for its population of the rare blue duck or whio.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had a great, exhilarating trip on the Mohaka River with Deon and his two young sons. Deon's expert guiding upped the fun factor while keeping us safe. He and his wife even provided us with dinner the night before when we arrived in Te Pohue food-less! We would recommend a trip with Deon in a heartbeat.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great afternoon out with family for a pre Xmas raft. Deon knows his river and makes for a fun trip with kids. We did the Grade 2 and will be back for the Grade 3. BBQ after the perfect finish up. Great hosts too.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Rafting with Deon was the highlight of our trip! We arrived in Napier via cruise ship. David greeted us exactly where he said he would, looking exactly like he said he would - standing out in the crowd in his Hawaiian shirt. He was friendly and informative and make the bus ride entertaining. Once kitted up, Deon was an absolute hoot to raft with. Rafting through that gorgeous scenery, Deon created adventure and fun and even though we were soaked by the end of it, even the nervous rafters in my group said they felt safe at all times and thoroughly enjoyed it. And to top it off, the food at the end, WOW! All in all - Fantastic team, fantastic time, fantastic memory. Thank you very much!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had a wonderful time with Deon it was very relaxed and lots of fun. We took Miss 7 and Miss 4 on this adventure for their birthdays and Deon took great care of our girls. He made it fun for them while also testing their boundaries. He kept it entertaining for Mum and Dad who were having lots of fun trying to push each other out of the raft and was very knowledgeable about the area and particularly the river. We can't wait to take Miss almost 3 on the trip when she is old enough. Definitely worth the trip up from Pongaroa. Thank you Deon and Jo.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Dean and his wife Jo were such lovely people. We had a lot of fun in the river. Dean was a great guide, telling us about the history of the river, and at the same time making sure we were having fun in the water. Will be back and will bring friends.
