β β β β β Left a bitter taste in my mouth and tainted my stewart island experience with my young family.
My wife and young children were extremely keen to try carving our own Jade and even to purchase a few ornaments.
Dave was an extremely condescending teacher. He actually made my child cry and told him he was no good. No patience. When the other customers left he actually started swearing out of what seemed like frustration. I can't believe I wasted money on this. I will never recommend this to my friends/family and I would not go back to Stewart Island if this is what the locals are like.
Thanks for ruining our holiday.

β β β β β This was without a doubt the highlight of our trip. Dave and Bean instantly made us feel at home and got us straight into our class. Magnificent experience with a master of his craft. We carved our own pieces of green stone for each other and have taken away memories for a life time. Thank you Dave.
If carving isn't for you then there's a gallery to look through and pieces available for purchase or perhaps commission a piece from Dave and/or Bean. Highly recommended.

β β β β β One of the best things we did on Stewart Island! Dave is a master carver and storyteller.
You get to pick from his wide selection of beautiful pounamu (greenstone/jade) from all over NZ, and he carefully guides you through the process for cutting/shaping/polishing. Dave and his wife entertained us with amazing stories of the heartfelt significance of various pounamu styles. With Daveβs history in Maori studies, as an exhibiting artist, set designer on Lord of the Rings, and now in such a relaxed way of life on Stewart Island, Dave himself was really our highlight and make our experience truly unique. Highly recommend!

β β β β β Looking for something unique? In a unique atelier/workshop with an amazing view over the bay, you can carve your own, unique piece of greenstone. Your teacher Dave, unique himself, will guide you through it - make sure you enjoy what he has to tell, whether itβs stories of his work on Lord oft he Rings or Maori culture, which he was a teacher for. I spent a wonderful time between skilfully made jewellery, the creative chaos of tools and semi-finished pieces and a hot coffee.
