Sentinel began in 2021 when a father was looking for a way to not be a redundant parent to his daughter. The quest for a business was started for Al and Micah, in an attempt to do life with family and go on an adventure as a father and daughter.
A conversation happened and an opportunity was proposed to build a cafe business together. With a background in business and hospitality, we all thought it was a challenge big enough to launch into, Sentinel was born.
The name was proposed in a brainstorming meeting and it resonated. A sentinel is someone who goes before their community, preparing a way and keeping watch. They stand on guard for the good of those they look out for. We like that a lot, it felt like our story and something to aspire to as people keen to add some good in the world.
In our first year we were nominated and won some hospitality awards, but more than that, the Sentinel family had created a beautiful addition to the Hamilton CBD. And so it began..

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A great place for a “treat yourself” lunch. The coffee comes in cups that are nice to drink out of. A finer ceramic than many places. They do batch brew as well as the usual coffee styles. The menu has a brunch/lunch feel. They have weekly specials and make seasonal changes as well so there’s usually something exiting on offer. The staff are super friendly. The decor is really nice and it’s well laid out. This is not a quick/fast place to eat, on a whim. However, they will take orders for you to dine in via phone or email, and it works well for those short lunch breaks.
