Definitely a must stop to hit click! ? It's really chilly since you are getting wind from one of the coldest place on Earth so be prepared with you gear and watch our for mud on your walk from the carpark!

Very nice walk over farmland to see the most Southerly point of the South Island. Great coastal views. Plenty of sheep too ? Worth a visit.

When we arrived Slope Point Road was closed due to construction. We trudged on and the construction crews were friendly to let us pass even though it was muddy (we had an all-wheel drive). It’s well worth the short walk from the road through two pastures. Sheer cliffs fall straight tot the sea and a selfie with the sign marker is all you need.

Due to its exposed position, this coastline sees some of the country's largest ocean swells, raising impressive waves from Antarctic storms. The Catlins is prone to weather patterns which originate from the sub-Antarctic ocean. The wind was howling gale force when I was here and the surrounding area is infamous for shipwrecks going back the last century. Already dubbed the "roaring 40,s"' climate change will cause stronger storm winds triggering larger and more frequent extreme waves over the next 80 years - with the largest increases occurring in the Southern Ocean. Tourists are surprised and comment on how windy it is in the capital city. You aren't see nothing yet until you come further down under. The closer you get to Antarctica the worse those winds get and the bigger those Southern Ocean storms are. Slope Point is the southernmost point on the South Island of New Zealand. There is no where else on earth that is anything like the Roaring Forties, with unlikely strong gusts of wind blowing you off the side of the cliff. The answer is no, I'm not stupid enough to take pictures from the edge of the cliff. The Roaring Forties in the Northern Hemisphere don’t pack the same punch that they do in the Southern Hemisphere. For centuries, sailors have feared the region below 40-degrees latitude, for good reason in the Southern Hemisphere. Yes, it is also true about the dolphins here in the Catlins, that they like to frolic and have fun and go surfing in the waves. I would not have believed it, unless I saw it with my own eyes.

Only 10 minutes walk from the car park into private property. Grateful for the access. You will find lot of sheep on the farm. The view is spectacular. Windy but breath taking view.

There's not much here, and it's a bit dangerous at the cliff end, but there are wonderful views and it is well worth the walk across the paddock to get to the southernmost point of the South Island.
