★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Established gravel trail takes you from the carpark to the lighthouse and back. A few steps from the lighthouse, you can access the coast and (at low tide) tide pools along grassy paths. Beautiful site - all outdoors.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Waipapa Lighthouse was erected in 1884 to commemorate the sinking of the SS Tararua in 1881.
This is one of the last remaining wooden lighthouses and is perched in a picturesque farming landscape.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Loved the short walk to the lighthouse . Toilets available at the Carpark. And a good view of the coast. Dog friendly must be on a leash and pick up after him.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wear a coat even if it's warm in the parking lot - it can get very cold and windy at the lighthouse and nearby beach! I'd definitely recommend going to the beach though, as it's just as pretty as the lighthouse and breathtakingly rugged.
When we visited in mid-April around 10 AM, there were no seals or sea lions to be seen. Maybe you'll have better luck at a different time of day!
Look closely at the sand on the beach if you head down below the lighthouse. It's really pretty, made of tiny polished orange stones.
