★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What a great experience! Tarata Fishaway is not just a stunning place, but the hospitality of Steve, Trudi and Micaela was second to none. Fishing with Steve could not have been better. His knowledge of the river, his genuine interest in catching fish and in making it fun made our time with him so enjoyable. Thank you Steve, you are one of a kind and I cannot tell you enough how much we appreciated your effort to get us hooked up! We will definitely be back and feel that we are richer for coming to Tarata and getting to know the Mattock’s. it was just perfect!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ After pulling off the mostly empty highway onto the totally empty access road and continuing to drive a number of kilometers, I thought our travel agent had lost her mind. Why had she sent us so far off the not-even beaten path to a fishing camp when I had asked for charm and character? Exactly!
Tarata Fishaway is so much more than the sum of its parts. Combining a stunning, almost-untouched physical setting with a warm, caring and engaging family, it is the perfect example of what all B and B’s or homestays should aspire to be. Our problem was that we were only booked for one night, which did not allow us to partake of most of the available adventures.
The food is very good, so definitely opt for the on-site dinner rather than going into town. Stephen will regale you with his stories about growing up in NZ. Also, I would not like to face the drive back from town after dark.
No, our travel agent had really not lost her mind – but rather helped us find a very special spot. Stephen, Trudy and their family have created a small patch of wilderness/farm/fishing camp/retreat that somehow makes you feel good about life by just being there. We miss it.
A special thanks goes to Mikayla, who gave us a tour of the farm and drove us down into the gorge to the riverbank. You’re a delightful young woman.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Rangitikei is a picturesque part of New Zealand and Tarata Fishaway is no exception to the beauty the area has to offer those visiting the region. With many accommodation options, home cooked meals, and outdoor experience on offer this is a must do on any ones holiday destination list. With spa pools that sit high above the winding river below and majestic views one can't help but relax. Would highly recommend staying here.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Good ole solid Kiwi values in a family based operation with AAA+ experience including our laugh a minute entertainment from our guides while enjoying a very safe rafting experience . Highly recommend this place and the views from our room were spectacular and the spa a bonus.
