β β β β β Amazing location and views with a warm room and comfortable bed. However if you have any dietary requirements this is not the place to come. We had an OK stay here and come here for the breathtakingly beautiful alpine scenery and chance to get out into nature and do the miriad of walks. My husband and I are both gluten and dairy free and specified this when we checked in. When originally making the booking we were told we had to book reservations for our breakfast and dinners which we did. Despite letting the Duty Manager know of our dietary requirements when we arrived, for our dinner we were told it was a buffet and that no other options were available. We checked out the buffet to find no dietary labelling on any of the items and that nearly all of the food had some type of dairy products on them. Staying in a premium hotel and paying a premium price you'd expect the ability, care and attentiveness of the staff to be able to accommodate guests special needs but surprisingly this does not seem to be the case at the Hermitage. Staff were offhand, disinterested and dismissive when we tried to clarify our options. Staying in such an isolated location means we had no other option but to eat what we could. Having to pay $55pp for such an experience means in future we will choose other self catering options. We did have one nice meal during our stay. We managed to find a smoked salmon salad for lunch in the upstairs cafe. When we asked if it was gluten and dairy free the chef stated that the sauce that would come with it contained gluten. I said so could we please have some olive oil instead? This is not rocket science, we can't have been the first guests to have dietary requirements. Very disappointing.

β β β β β Didnβt stay as a guest, but stopped in for cocktails. Stunning views overlooking the valley, however in other areas, it wasnβt so stunning. The Glacier Explorer cocktail tasted like a blue poweraid that was thrown in a blender with some ice, with random flowers thrown on top. It felt and looked like a childβs paddling pool, and I suspect very little alcohol - not worth the $22 price tag. Asked for desert, but was told by staff it could only be eaten in the restaurant which was 2 meters away. Doesnβt really make sense. Decor, music, and atmosphere; incredibly sleepy.

β β β β β Wow, loved our stay at the hermitage! Great staff, especially Eddie, who directly gave us a very warm welcome at the reception and made our stay even better by greeting with a big smile every time we passed!
Food was great as well, endless choice and prepared with love. The rooms might be a bit old fashioned from the inside but who cares about that if you get such a great view?
Highly recommended, would love to stay there again.

β β β β β We didn't stay as guests but went to the Hermitage for buffet dinner and it was great, seemed expensive at first ($55 per person) but the buffet was fantastic, a large variety of options for all dietary requirements, the meat and seafood was cooked perfectly and the service was excellent. We also went in again for a pizza and beer from the cafe which was also really good. From a food perspective it's well worth a visit.

β β β β β Visited today, celebrating our wedding anniversary.
The dining experience is anywhere between relaxed to semi-fine dining. It is also family friendly.
Food price I thought is very reasonable for a buffet dinner considering there is no supermarket in the village. Can only get food from another place which I think is pricey ($27 for a pizza).
There's a seafood bar; pastas; veges & cold salads and meat selection. Not to mention that the desert variety did not disappoint.
The staff were super friendly. We were given a small platter for our anniversary which was a really nice gesture, thank you! ?
Needless to say the spectacular view of Aoraki is the perfect backdrop. I highly recommend this place.

β β β β β Friendly staff. The view from my room was fabulous. The breakfast was worth getting. The shower was nice and hot. It wouldβve been great if the bathtub was big enough for two people. We paid NZ$380 for an ensuite with two beds including breakfast.

β β β β β With covid in mind service was below 5 star expectations and experiences. 1 room had an unpleasant smelling fridge, another an ineffective shower.
No guide offered or concierge services to rooms.
Wait services were good to very good but systems a bit dated. Food was very good but minimalist value for money.
5 star prices with 3 star performance.

β β β β β The staff were useless. It was if they'd never worked in hospitality before and don't have common sense. We went to the cafe twice and both times had different staff. Both times we slowly read our order one item at a time, then repeated it multiple times and they still got it completely wrong. At the restaurant they brought the wrong meals to our table and the waiter didn't pour our wine. When we checked out of the motel they tried to charge us more money because they'd only charged us for 2 people at check in, when we said we had 4. For the amount you pay here it was quite disappointing.
We were also quite shocked by the price of the museum. It had always been free and I understand a small charge during covid times but $20 is excessive. You're going to turn a lot of people away at that price.
On a positive note, the hotel and motel are really nice, and the food was always delicious!
