★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful walk through bush to the base of the rocks. Lots of native fusha. Short scramble over some fallen columns and you are there. Dunedin is one of only 4 places in the world you can find this awesome type of rock formation, also known as ‘columnar jointing’. The Organ Pipes were formed as lava from an ancient volcano cooled, with fracking (shrinking and cracking) of the rock occurring vertically, creating 6-sided columns. Terrific views of Dunedin. A must visit spot.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ As a walk this is pleasant, but a word of caution, this should only be done by the sure footed.
The track in is dirt and stone and has some steep parts, so even with a little precipitation this track is quite slippery: wear good shoes.
Secondly, the very last section to the organ pipes is a steep climb over stones and rocks: not for the faint hearted or kids.
Parking is very limited at the start too, maybe for 4-6 cars only, depending on how they are parked!
