The pines are now cut down but it’s still a beautiful place to camp. A little exposed but waking up next to the lake is stunning. There are loads of freedom camping spots in the area

Picturesque view of the snowy Mt Cook and pastel blue Lake Pukaki. Can get really cold, went late May and camped with an RV. Worth it! Pros: Not much people and you can find a spot just for you Cons: Not an electric campsite

Great spot for freedom camping. When the skies are clear, the views of the alps are breataking. We stayed here at 2 different nights at the exact spot! We initially drove to the other side of the Lake on Hayman Road and drove back here to the Pines. Public toilets here but one of those hole in the ground kinda thing. No rubbish bins or water taps. Loads of spots to camp overnight. Sunset from here was amazing too

One of my favourite places to stop and enjoy the scenery, no facilities, so you must be self contained, pack in pack out. Keep it beautiful

This location was one of my favorite freedom camping nights in the campervan during my 2 wks trip in South Island. Experienced sunset there and it’s a perfect spot for star gazing at night. The view was awesome in the morning and we even spotted a rainbow after it rained a little. Will definitely love to come back again!

The McKenzie District Council has to be highly commended on the freedom camp sites they make available to all self contained vehicles. We have enjoyed our stay in your area to chase the fish & R&R. We have had 7 days in your area now so lots of dollar's spent & met some great retailers. From Sue & Keith Ross & Lynley & Warwick Bryant we thank you. Cheers.

This was my favourite freedom campsite during my campervan journey around the south island of New Zealand. I had driven up from Queenstown that morning passing lake tekapo on route. I have to say I think lake Pukake is better and more beautiful than tekapo. I found this freedom site straight away using my Google maps. I arrived about 3 in the afternoon end Feb 2020 & there was only other one campervan there at that time. I parked right at the Lakeside. As the hours went by a few more vans arrived and by late evening I would say there were no more than 10 Parked in huge car park area. Plenty of space for everyone however take care parking as there are huge potholes and uneven ground. I met a couple whilst camping here and we all laid on the ground staring up at the night sky which was very clear and this is in a dark sky reserve so stargazing is first class even with your naked eye. I woke the next morning to the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen in my life. Highly recommend this location you will not be disappointed
