β β β β β Room was very comfortable and laundry facilities were good. Staff were helpful. Restaurant food selection could have been better but meals were big so never hungry.

β β β β β The staff were friendly and helpful but the buildings, especially the rooms, are very tired and in desperate need of a refresh. Our Kereru room had a makeshift layout including a shower you could barely move your arms in. The bed was ok but the curtains were hopeless and it was right next to the carpark which also services a bar so noisy at night. i am told the Tui suites are also showing their age.
Buffet dinner and breakfast were what you expect - decent food but nothing special.
The bay is beautiful but the water is murky unlike many other bays in the sounds so not great for swimming

β β β β β When we arrived we were told our room would be ready for a 2pm check in , we finally got our room at 3pm , this had a big impact on our plans for the rest of the afternoon, we also got told only one restaurant would be open and the only option for dinner was a buffet, which for a place that promotes food as a big part of what it has to offer was very disappointing, even more disappointing was the very low quality of the buffet food ,it was terrible, some sort of grissly , dry beef in a gravy , salads that were basic and if you werenβt in the first sitting then you missed out on the prawns in the prawn salad as they didnβt replenish the dishes . The desert selection also was very basic and very underwhelming and as a result largely remains in touched by all dinners on the night, The room was o.k but but a cold shower was not great , after talking to others staying it seems we werenβt the only ones that had cold showers .Breakfast in the morning also was a buffet that had been sitting out with no burners heating the food so the breakfast food was cold , to the point I cancelled my cooked breakfast and opted for toast & cereal , I guess there is a first time for everything! Having said that the toast had to be eaten with no butter as they had run out of butter . To be honest we could not wait to get away from the place but not before we had been over charged on our room account , It pays to check ! This experience was overall very disappointing and did spoil our sounds trip , I guess we live and learn βΉοΈ

β β β β β We had an excellent room with fantastic views. Staff were wonderful and food delicious. It was a lovely setting and was a pity we only stopped overnight during the Queen Charlotte walk.

β β β β β Last time I was at The Portage was 1987. There are still elements of the old bit left which was nice. Beautiful setting and the outside seating area was lovely. Beset by a couple of bees which wouldn't go away and in the process of shooing them away lost a Crediton golf club badge ( if anyone find it in the bushes off the balcony we would be very appreciative). OMG the roads need a bit of work, getting there by car was a bit of a mission but worth the drive. Good old THC!

β β β β β Arrived at the portage early afternoon for check-in. As soon as we got there there was a mix up with rooms so we waited around, The snapper bar and eatery was closed and the only food they were serving was a buffet dinner, and if you did not want that, we had the option of fries or wedges.
The room is in need of a serious revamp for the price we paid.
Fortunately the staff were great that were working around the portage and views were amazing.

β β β β β Amazing location and our room had wonderful views. The staff were very welcoming and did everything they could to make us comfortable. Not a huge choice for food but we could understand that given covid and time of year meant the resort was quiet. Generous portions of good quality comfort food just what you need after a day walking or cycling the track.
The room was comfortable and clean but was a little tired and no tv. Would have been good to have access to somewhere to store our bikes other than on our balcony. Coffee was terrible and too much single use plastic in use e.g butter servings.

β β β β β We had a great nights stay at the portage, the staff were friendly and efficient, we couldnβt believe how great a value the meal was, excellent food and service three courses $39, us 5 Guys riding the trail had a nice motel room with split levels and 5 single beds all clean, warm and smart looking. We had bikes to charge and the staff even found us an extension lead! Keep up the great work thanks team :)
