About The River Lodge B&B and Weddings

Starting at the National Park Railway Station, Fishers Track is a mostly  downhill trail with spectacular scenery. This Grade 2 track is an  excellent backcountry ride for those mountain bike riders with only a  little experience. The 17km track begins with a short climb to a summit  with breathtaking views of Mount Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro  and the Retaruke Valley. The downhill section of trail is 6km long and  is a beautiful ride through farmland. Allow 2-3 hours to ride from  end-to-end.

Great breakfast! Superb view of the mountain. Lots of small touches making it 10/10 in every way. Fire lit in our canbine when we arrived. Beautiful little cabins. Lovely position in beautiful grounds to wander around. Ruru (owl) singing us to sleep. Comfortable lounge to relax in. Fantastic host. We went with our 5 year old and it was perfect.

This place is a little off the beaten path, so a perfect escape, and getaway. This secluded, quiet location is a perfect retreat. Daniel is a superb host, and has looked after every minute detail. Perfect views of Ruapehu, lovely little walk around the property and river, as well as many amenities on site. If you are staying in one of the Chalets, definitely arrange for the wood fired tub. We would highly recommend!

We booked the whole lodge and grounds for our wedding over the long weekend. Our guests that stayed at the lodge had only positive things to say. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the lawns and gardens are well maintained. Over the past year Dani has put some very thoughtful and personal touches to the property that only add to its magic. As a host Dani is very easy to deal with, very helpful and provides overall excellent hospitality. This place truly is one of Ohakune's hidden gems!

The perfect 'honey moon' location. Quiet secluded spot, beautiful mountain views, nicely decorated very roomy bedroom with huge bed, cosy lounge with open fire and wonderful European breakfast. And Dani was the perfect host. We will definitely return.

We loved our four night stay at The River Lodge, we were so sad to have to leave!! Chalet 2 was perfect for the four of us - we appreciated the rustic cosiness of the place, which feels so perfect in the midst of so much natural beauty. The accommodation provides everything you need, so it's easy to just settle right in and feel at home, with the wood fire keeping the place toasty right through the cold winter nights. The included continental breakfasts are yummy, and set you up well for the day. There's lots to do and see in the Ohakune region, and we did a few of those things (biking up to the Old Coach road viaduct was pretty cool) - but we also enjoyed just hanging out around the place - exploring the river's edge, visiting with some of its resident eels, talking to the cows next door, waiting for the mountain to emerge from behind the clouds, soaking up the European alpine-style atmosphere in the main lodge, looking for the cats, and soaking our weary bones in the spa...it's such a peaceful and beautiful place, you don't really need to go anywhere else!! Another important factor adding to the "feel right at home" effect was our host, Mr Daniel (Dani) Schlumpf. Dani is truly in his element looking after his place and his guests - he always has a smile on his face, and who could blame him? He clearly loves it here, and genuinely wants to share the beauty and wonders of this part of New Zealand with the people who choose to visit it and stay at his accommodation. He knows the region well, and is always happy to recommend places to visit and things to do. Dani's natural charm is definitely a big part of the appeal of the place - it wouldn't be the same without him. So, if you're considering a visit to the Ruapehu region, go and stay at The River Lodge - you'll love it, and so will Dani!!

Absolutely pleasant experience at The River Lodge. Great hospitality. Excellent European breakfast. Fantastic view of the mountains. Really quiet. And the best of all, the lodge has a EV charging station (Type 2 AC).
