About The White Swan Country Hotel

The Story of The
White Swan

The year is 1862, and the S.S. White Swan sails from Napier to Wellington, carrying with her members of parliament and trunks packed with national documents for the first ever parliamentary meeting in our nation’s capital.

But, as the Swan rounds Uriti Point east of Greytown, they are engulfed by an approaching storm – and with a roar she is caught on a reef. Amidst rising swells, the captain calls to abandon ship, and, clutching only a few scant belongings, these desperate sailors clamber into lifeboats and head for shore.

Crew and passengers alike seek shelter in a nearby woolshed, where they are discovered by Mr. John Moore, a local farmer and homesteader. Delighted to take these new guests into his home, Moore provides these shipwrecked travellers with food, beer, and beds, and over four nights he and his wife Mary puts on such a grand show of warmth and generosity that it is a struggle for the members of parliament to head on their way.

A century and a half on, here at the White Swan Country Hotel we look to the spirit of Mr & Mrs John Moore as something of founding fathers. Their display of hospitality is one that we strive to uphold. While you might not arrive here shipwrecked and desperate, we hope to welcome you in such a way to make Mr & Mrs John Moore proud.

Lovely outside area for drinking and dining in the sun. Our waitress was lovely. The food was fabulous and the cocktails hit the spot! Wasn't expensive which was great as Greytown can be a bit on the pricey side!

First time there today and will be the last. Ordered steak sandwich, steak tasted strange like it had almost gone off and was stone cold, the bread was also soggy which didn’t make things much better!! We also orders fish & chips but the fish was dry and coating looked almost burnt, very disappointing especially for the price!!

A little overpriced for the food they serve and the service was a little all over the place. They struggled to get back round to our table after food was served. Paid $8 for starter bread and it was just toast and some butter, could use some dipping oils to flesh that out. We had a good waitress although she seemed a little overwhelmed with the numbers there. I will not be back given the choice I can try somewhere else.

Stayed 2 nights beginning of May 2022. Room looked lovely on entry - big and airy and somewhere to put things when you’ve unpacked (big plus). Sofa and chairs comfortable (amazing - somewhere to sit for both of us - so many hotels have one chair and the second person has to sit on the bed ?). However, windows filthy & old paint splattered on outside. Excuse was they couldn’t be cleaned by hotel staff and a commercial cleaner would have to be brought in. And…? None locally?? Bathroom fogged up badly when we were showering and there was no fan. Opened the bathroom door to,let steam out and bedroom windows instantly fogged up instead. Shower about 30 years out of date and sealant around bottom black places ? Hand basin had a plug that needed pliers to extract from hole - no chain. Am sure you can afford a new one. Slamming door underneath our room ? No danger you could put a closing mechanism on it then?? Most priceless of all was on returning to our room at 4pm to find the maid (or whatever it is you call them these days -cleaner? Chamber person?) must’ve had a mental blackout. Bed covers merely yanked to the top, not folded back, cushions on the floor in the corner, debris from the overcooked croissants we’d had for breakfast (crumbs literally flew everywhere) still all over the carpet. The only thing the cleaner had done properly was change the towels. Bathroom floor not mopped and coffee sachets not topped up either, so had to ask for more. The woman at reception had to get the vacuum cleaner, having asked me β€œAre you sure this is how you left it this morning?” which I found insulting. Dinner was average, and not improved by cold soggy chips. To the young waiter’s credit, when we mentioned this, he shot off without a murmur and brought fresh hot ones. Excellent. Give that man a pat on the back, you could teach your colleagues a thing or two about service. Gave the hotel the feedback they requested when we departed and haven’t heard a word since. Damn rude. Clearly they only respond to good reviews. You need a miracle, guys - if you’re ever going to wow overseas visitors (or even Kiwis) again - starting with the management.

We booked the weekend package and spent 2 nights in the George Suite. Loved everything about our stay. The pan-fried John Dory plate I had in the Restaurant on the Saturday night was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. Faultless. Friendly efficient service at all times. Have recommended to all our friends and will return. Thank you for our lovely weekend!!

We’ve stayed here plenty of times over the years. Our favourite hotel room is the Madison which is New York themed. Very spacious lots of windows and a balcony. Lots of improvements evident since Nick and Rosie took over. Keep up the great work and thanks to the team for another fab visit.

Delightful service. Our very large group enjoyed the garden bar area for a lunch booking. Food arrived quicker than expected and all orders were correct. Dogs were no problem in that outdoor area. Setting is idyllic. Slightly pricy. Good range of food options for restricted diets.

Had a meal here while staying in town. All 4 of us cleaned our plates, was absolutely delicious! Steak cooked exactly as requested, very well presented and a good price. Staff were extremely professional and service was impeccable from arrival to leaving. Clean and tidy, also impressed with the crystal glasses and romantic setting. I would give more than 5 stars of I could!
